Ok:
You need to install SM 3.95 or 4.0 CVS
Then, go to http://stepmaniaonline.com/ and register an account on the forums
When you've done that and copied all of the songs from your current SM, create a profile name on SM with the same screenname you used for the forums.
Then, at the main screen, there's an option that will allow you to connect to a server. The main server address is smonline.us:24842, but you can connect to any server.
And you're in!
NOTE: To select a room/song: ctrl + enter
I might have left out some things but I think this is enough for you to get it to work
