    Victorian Bushfires. 173 confimed dead.

As some people may have heard. There has been severe bushfires in all corners of victoria, australia.
Currently the death toll stands at 173 but is expected to exceed 200 once the searching of houses and burnt-out cars has been completed.
Unfortunately most of the fires that have destroyed almost 1000 houses, were intentionally lit. Which really makes you wonder how inhuman some people can be.

I did have a lot to write about here, but am a little lost for words at the moment so i apologise for a less-informative post.
You can see all the up to date information here

Me and my fiance sarah, have donated $1000 to the bushfire relief effort. This tragedy has literally taken whole towns off the map, leaving nothing standing in its path. Thankfully the true spirit of australia showed when almost $10 million was donated in the first 24 hours (roughly 6.5mil USD). But this is merely a drop in the ocean for what is required to rebuild a whole region from scratch.

For anyone who would like to donate, any donation over $2 is tax-deductable.

    Thankyou,

    Jae

I heard about this in the news too, I think they said it was so hot that some houses would spontaneously catch on fire. I can't believe some people would intentionally start fires though. Makes you think =\

The prime minister has said that as far as he is concerned, arson is akin to mass murder.
I personally hope they find the culprits and throw them in a cold, dark hole for the next 30+years.

Far too many people i know have lost their houses/farms/land/cars in the gippsland/south gippsland area. It makes me feel sick to my stomach to think some lighter-happy retard could do this. Right at the peak of bushfire season. Why?

The massive fires that we have in Southern California are always started by ****ing pricks with no motivation to start a fire other than just to hurt people. It's disgusting.

For the most part, the death tolls here remain fairly low when we have fires...I can't say why so many have perished in the Victorian bushfires to be quite honest. Regardless, it is life that is not meant to be lost, especially at the hands of a man made natural disaster.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Australia since I lived there for years when I was young, so a fire over there is just like a fire over here, and I hope that relief efforts are succeeding and that your firefighters will get this under control. If it's not drought for you guys, it's gotta be a massive fire to cap it off.

I'm considering donating some money. I'll have to check my budget and see what I can afford.

It is a very unusual death toll. Unfortunately a lot of the people who had to make the decision to either stay and defend their homes or leave, left too late or were simply unprepared for what has eventuated as our worst firestorm on record. (see ash wednesday fires, etc. 75 was our worst toll prior to this)

Every summer, thousands of fires burn across this hot, dry continent, and there are not enough firefighters to protect every home. Many in rural Australia know that it is only a matter of time before they, or someone they know, will face a stark choice: evacuate or stay and fight the fires.

Fire authorities across Australia advise residents who choose to defend their homes to stay indoors while the blaze passes through their area. Citing statistics from past fires, the agencies say that most people can survive a wildfire as long as they avoid direct contact with the searing temperatures and scalding gases that come with an advancing fire.

However, many of the residents caught up in the Victoria blazes had no time for an orderly escape, and some were killed when the houses they had taken shelter in collapsed.
Edit: it is unfortunate that in our history of fires can/have lost upwards of a million head of livestock, and countless animals that are caught up in the tragedy.

This is completely off-topic but I'd like to inform you, OP, that your avatar is scary as ****.

On-topic: pyromania is stupid and is no way an excuse to ever commit arson.

It's really sad people can start them just because they have a heat-wave out there and they think everyone will assume that caused it.

It's really horrible how people are going to lose their homes and their livelihoods. It's a real shame that someone would do that to so many people.

Bolth, i hope your mums family is safe. Nothing could be worse than getting that phone call. One of the guys i work with lost 3 relatives in Strathewen.

I'm about to head to bed, (it's midnight and i have work @ 5:30). So hopefully when the rest of the world wakes up and peruses the forum they will see this and make a much-appreciated donation, or even through the information link in the first post, you can send a message of support to the firefighters.

                        oh, and one more thing...
