    Re: A theory I pondered

Music is the best memorable source of memories.

    Did I put that right?

You can remember things a lot easier with what you hear when it happens. Try to remember being with a friend. Was there music playing? You could easily remember what had happened if you hear what you heard back then. But then think of a smell you may have smelled with that friend. Not as easy to remember with scent.

Try playing video games with music off but effects on. It's so very boring.

p.s. hey you should make movie music and make it memorable so everyone will know your song

post-dumps abstractly represent the existential nihilism that the song invokes in the listener with negative space, evoking the ephemeral nature of the mind - the journey of stepmania begins in hope yet soon becomes corroded into a dialectic of futility, leaving only a sense of dread and the unlikelihood of a new synthesis

It's said that aromas and scents trigger your longest term memory, but I agree with with KgZ. Every time I think of The Little Mermaid, I think of that song, "Under the Sea".

              KgZ's theory

              Point: Mega Man 2
              Counter-point: Spaceballs

Seriously I couldn't tell you any of the music in Spaceballs and yet it's one of my favorite movies (you might be able to tell I don't watch very many movies)

What you're getting at is a fundamental principle of memetics. Interesting concept, but it's by no means absolute.

For example, FLCL has an amazing soundtrack, possibly the best of all anime ever. Would it be a terrible anime if it had no soundtrack? No, it just wouldn't be as great as it is. Now consider Dragon Ball Z. Memorable soundtrack? Perhaps a little bit in the Japanese source, but the American dub went the route of crap music. Did that ever stop English dub Dragon Ball Z from being worthy of watching? Did that ever stop the English dub from being popular? Does applying the Japanese musical soundtrack to the dub (as can be seen on the recent DVD box sets) increase the appeal (or, in this specific case, memorable-ness) by that much?

I guess what I'm getting at here is that all sensory stimulus can affect how effective a meme is. A visual medium alone can be memorable, such as the Mona Lisa or American Gothic for example. Sounds can be memorable such as the songs you mentioned. Even the abstract can be memorable, such as quotes and phrases. Then there's obviously smells and tastes, but those will always be more personal and not truly "memeable" on a macro scale.

I would think that it has more to do with how we naturally are. At young ages (I'm talking infancy here), a person's sight is not very well developed, thus we remember things, such as our family, by scent and sound. Also, something like a theme song is easier to recall, as you can accidentally catch inklings of it in everyday noise or from some other song your listening to.
