    Still struggling with Starcraft...

I have the strategy guide from Prima and everything, but I'm still having trouble with the 8th Zerg mission in the original game (I figure the best way to improve is through campaign mode, but as with so many other things related to gaming, I'm probably wrong). You know, the one with the Nydus Canals and where you first get access to Ultralisks.

Anyway, my main problem is I can't figure out how to get an adequate defense force on each of the beacons quickly enough. First time I tried the mission I attempted to get an economy going...big mistake. A Reaver/Dragoon combo took care of the meager defenses of one of the beacons that I'm supposed to prevent any and all Dark Templars from reaching, and I lost in about 2 and a half minutes.

Second try I thought I'd begin as before, but this time send an Ultralisk to help out. Turns out he had to run through an enemy base to get there, and he didn't finish the run. Obviously, they're too valuable to lose so early on in such a foolish manner, so I quit right there. >_<

The annoying thing is, though, that I don't even start with a Spawning Pool, but enough minerals to start another Hatchery, and I honestly have no clue where to begin. Anyone who's beaten this mission willing to offer some insight on what they did so I can give it a shot?

Play MP. It's far more fun.

"That just will not do." was keywii's response as she lunged for the scissors, pulled the blades apart, and clamped them down on the base of foil's shaft. Blood start gushing out of the wound where his penis used to be.
      "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Yelled Foil in horror.
"Don't worry. I'm a wizard" uttered Keywii. And with that, Foil's penis grew back.

This. You'll improve a lot faster, too.

But if you're worried about Reaver/Dragoon, then get hydras and lings. Lings destroy goons and Hydras destroy reavers.

Get lurker tech and morph a few lurkers, then keep ovies around the mission-critical whatevers to be able to knock out observers, and you should have an easier time of it.

EDIT: I just realized you're not in Brood War, but in the original game. I don't know if lurkers existed in the original.

Man, I haven't played the campaign in a while...

Like MooMoo said, play multiplayer if you want to get better. Playing against computers doesn't help very much at all.

            More specifically:
            - If your economy is lacking, you probably need more drones/more expansions.
            - If your troops are lacking, build more hatcheries.
            - Always have troops near beacons. Hell, make some sunken/spore colonies.
            - Always have ovies at the beacons.
            - If you're having trouble with goons, it's probably better to attack move with lings and focus fire with hydras. I personally wouldn't use mutas against goons.
            - Don't bunch up your units when you attack reavers; micromanage so that you lead the scarab target away from the bulk of your forces.

              Re: Still struggling with Starcraft...

First, I had no idea there's something wrong with wanting to get through the story before the sequel comes out, even though it has been 10 years in the making. Man, you guys are harsh. :/

Second, thanks for the tips, Wine. I'm still learning how to use hotkeys, so I think I need to work on that before I try micromanaging. The problem in this mission is that I can't get the Creep to extend to the beacons, so I can't build colonies around them. (Might as well play MP, anyway, since I lost the guide.) The problem comes when I'm trying to decide what to focus my fire on...Photon Cannons or enemy troops.

Third, I don't have Lurker tech because my brother still hasn't forked over his Brood War disc. Little bitch. I figure he'll do it when I beat the original SP mode, though. Not only is it a great story, it also is designed to let you become familiar with a few units at a time and become comfortable with each unit's special quirks.

Well I mean considering even Starcraft 2 is going to be played mainly for mp, mp is better. Of course, single player is a good intro to the game. I beat the first two missions for each race, and after that, I learned the basics and was able to do some quick single player skirmishes before going into mp. But if you wanna play the whole campaign, that's fine too.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the campaign mode, and everyone should play it (While listening to the story ofcourse). It's just painstakingly easy, and if you can't beat it, then you wont last a few seconds online.

Get faster. Better mechanics, unit control. You're probably not doing much of anything wrong, other than not being good enough at the game :/

Sorry to say it, but that's how Starcraft works.

Also, the single player missions bear very little resemblance to the kinds of processes and techniques you'll want to learn for MP. I mean, I guess learning how to play good football will sort of help you be a better rugby player, but you'd be better served just learning to play rugby if that's the sport you want to go with.

You don't need the guide! *tears it up*

Just build a hatchery next to the beacon if you need creep.
I think you'd better get a grasp on defending before you start attacking. Photon cannons should not be a priority anyway.

Well, I FINALLY beat the eighth mission, but now I'm getting butterflies in my stomach just thinking about the ninth. At least this time I don't have to worry about keeping Kerrigan alive. This one introduces the almost-almighty Carrier to the enemy forces, as well as Arbiters that cloak units that they're near. I'm thinking Spore Colonies will be huge in this mission, which is the one where you get the Khaydarin Crystal and must hold the location for a full 10 minutes.

By the way, the thing that I think tipped the balance in Zerg 8 for me was looking up what that base needed to make Reavers, then focusing all my attacks on the crucial structures (in this case, the robotics centers).

Try playing starcraft 64 on an n64 controller. Now that is hard.

I wouldn't know how to explain to someone how to get better at starcraft. You just have to know things, and do things faster.
