Ever wonder how it's done? Simple, just use a transparent banner. You'd be amazed how many times I get asked this, so I figured I'd post a thead.
Adding the transparent banner extends your BG image through the banner.
If you don't know how to make a transparent image (you'll need some type of graphics software), then just use the 942x110 banner below. Also, 942 is the general fit of a BG image to an FFR profile.
