    Paying attention to arrow notes

I've been getting better and better, and now I'm looking at some things that I can change to help. I know that each arrow color represents it's placement in a measure, but is it a vital aspect later on in harder songs or is it something that can be overlooked and forgotten?

Re: Paying attention to arrow notes

There are some people who are good at sm/itg/ddr/ffr/whatever that don't know the difference between a 24th and a 16th, they just see notes, it can definitely be overlooked without affecting your skill.

It's vital in regards to PA. If you're trying to AAA the harder songs, then you will have to have a good understanding of the timing windows that the colored notes create with the notes around them.

If you're just trying to full combo, then it's obviously not as important. For example, something like a 48th note before a 4th note can be hit like a jump if you're not worried about PA, but if you're looking for an AAA, then it's very hard to get away with that kind of sloppy play.

Do you think it should be a skill later developed and ignored until you have a very strong basic structure?

It's not really important, but it'll help you a lot. Besides, you shouldn't overlook anything. =]

EDIT: You should be able to "understand" the notes as soon as possible. Having a basic understanding, and idea is always helpful.

EDIT2: Your big words are confusing me! Talk simpler because I'm only 3 years old. ='[

I would say it's more important to get your basic song playing abilities strong. Learn how to handle 16ths (yellows), learn how to handle jacks, jumpstream, and rolls before you worry about trying to PA 32nd/48th/64ths.

Really it's just something you get used to. Eventually you will be able to tap out the beat of a song unassisted and then you should start paying attention.

              (4th)Blue = The Beat
(8th)Red = Twice as fast as the Beat
(16th)Yellow = Four times as fast as the beat
(32nd)Orange = Eight times as fast as the beat
(64th)Cyan = Sixteen as fast as the beat

Of course this only applies in streams as they are placed according to measure but you can use colours to detect weird rhythms as-well.

Purple and Pink ect are something entirely different and requires you to cut the timing into an odd number like 1.33 times as fast as the beat but you'll probably get used to it, was easy for me since I took music and know how fast triplets should be.

              Best of luck!

Switch the red and blue arrow distinctions there, Fido.

The only thing I can see that this might be good for would be being able to form an educated opinion on the quality of a simfile or if you plan on making a file of your own. For example, you can train yourself to "hear" if a song calls for the use of a jackhammer at a certain point.

Alternatively, you can train yourself to listen for weird rhythms in harder songs; who knows, it might help you hit the notes if you can hear the rhythm they're supposed to follow.

Okay, well, I guess you don't necessarily have to have a great understanding of the meaning of the notes to hit them, but it still helps in my opinion.

If I see certain colors coming up, I know how to react to them while I'm playing. Like TeRa said, some people just hit notes and don't really care. For me, I play a bit more analytically, so the colored notes indicate tempo changes for me.

so a red-lightpurple-darkpurple-red should be hit like a triplet (music wise)?

No, more like a 24th stream.

Yeah, you mean like in the song 00.01? Because that whole song is a big triplet to me.

I guess you can look at it like a triplet. I still look at it like a stream, just a 12th stream.
