The 'I r learning some new instrument' help thread

Well I decided to make this thread mainly because I love learning different instruments but am too lazy/ poor to take lessons from a professional.

Currently I'm learning electric guitar. I just learned the basic major chords A B C D E F G. I only learned one variation, the first variation from this site : http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/

I want to know if there are general rules when playing chords and any intervals because I'm constantly confused which fingers to use for which notes in the chords/intervals for the best continuity between each progression. For those of you that have played piano, you should know how fingering is almost second to rhythm in a piece. Does that fingering idea from piano apply to the guitar?

Re: The 'I r learning some new instrument' help thread

well, I'm gonna try my hardest to not act like 8 years old like everyone else who's responded so far (lol) to answer the OP's question:

Only when playing classical guitar is it important to have good fingering (I know that sounds dirty but let's pretend we're not 8 years old for a moment =) ). I was actually gonna pick it up cuz I thought "how hard could this be?" but yea, it's pretty dam stupid for my purposes. I respect classical guitarists, but dam is it annoying to learn!

I play mostly electric, some acoustic, so I believe my experience is more relevant to your situation/question. There aren't any rules really for fingering, just play however you feel best. There's some chords I play where I use my thumb to hit a note on the low E string. I'd say index and pinky are the fingers you want to get best at using, but they're all pretty important

Re: The 'I r learning some new instrument' help thread

For chords fingering is important. For instance in an A Maj (x-0-2-2-2-0) chord it'd be better to use three fingers while for say a F Maj (x-x-3-2-1-1) chord you can either cram two fingers (index and middle) on the first fret or barre the first fret with your index and use either combination of the remaining fingers for the other frets.

For basic chords fingering isn't important but when it comes to classical pieces, or since you play electric, those crazy ass solos fingering gets really important.

P.S. There's no set style. It's really whatever works best for you and ends up sounding great.

heh, i guess it's just experiment and see what fits with the song huh? I only just finished learning chords and stuff, no clue what notes i'm actually playing though, (tabs got no letters). But is it important to know the notes on guitar?

                  yes very important!!!!!!!!!!

including bar chords and some jazz chords
jazz chords are very hard and take some time to get use to though!

Yes, mostly. It lacks a few chord variations, but from what they give you, it's easy to make them yourself if you know the notes that are in each chord, and the notes that correspond with each fret.

kgz, the hunter is right. He's not talking about building jazz chords, but rather executing them. On the guitar, if you want to play a specific jazz chord, there are only so many ways to play it and they're usually a bitch to play. The only saving grace is that there are so many jazz chords from which to choose, and often jazz chords have a very loose tonal function. So usually something that sounds generally like the chord you what you want works well, too. D6add9 too hard on your fingers? Make it an Em9 by dropping the A to a G.

kind of off topic with guitar..

Anyone have any sheet musics for exercises saxophone? Also a few chord variations on jazz stuff would be nice too, on saxophone.
