When you play quarterback, unless you have Peyton Manning-like accuracy, you need another threat. Therefore, running is the easiest way to catch people off guard. Whether it's pure quickness or the ability to make tacklers miss, these quarterbacks can do it with both their arm and their legs. Here are my top 10 mobile quarterbacks of all time:
10. Brett Favre (don't let his lack of statistics fool you, he is one of the greatest improvisers ever, and can scramble away from pressure, and throw while being tackled, although he throws many interceptions)
9. Mark Brunell (better in his younger days, but more of a threat to throw than run, although he could do both)
8. Doug Flutie (although only selected for the Pro Bowl once, and his lack of size, he's fast, and can unleash a long throw at any time)
7. Bobby Douglass (never seen him play, but he did hold the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback until Michael Vick broke it)
6. Michael Vick (would be higher if wasn't for his arrest and lack of ability to throw the ball consistently)
5. John Elway (big, strong, and could run for long gains, also, did you see his amazing 8-yard run in Super Bowl 32? He is willing to take a hit (remember, mobility isn't always quickness, but ability to evade tacklers and scramble for necessary first downs)
4. Steve McNair (just by looking at him, you know he's tough, and he's fast too, and he has a strong arm)
3. Kordell Stewart (by far the most underrated quarterback on the list, he holds the NFL Record for longest run by a quarterback, an 80-yard TD run. He just didn't last long because of one bad performance in the 2001 AFC Championship Game against the Patriots, which he threw 2 interceptions in the last 5 minutes to ruin a comeback opportunity for the Steelers)
2. Randall Cunningham (he has pure elusiveness, he can throw, run, and evade tacklers, watch him if you don't believe me)
1. Steve Young (obvious choice for first place, if you've seen this guy play, you know what im talking about. He can do everything, and if you've seen his 60-yard TD run against Minnesota in the 1988 Playoffs, that pretty much defines him right there)
Although you may not agree about the placement of a player or lack of placement of a player on this list (and please tell me if you do), you have to agree about this: these quarterbacks are definitely some of the best mobile quarterbacks to ever play the position, and define the term "mobile".
I spent a long time making this (about 20 minutes) and I'm proud of it.
