I know the suggestion of getting rid of the background music altogether has already been answered, but what about simply changing it to a different tune, or even song?
A tune might be a bit more work, since you have to make sure it loops nicely, can end nicely, etc. A song however is already done, and generally takes anywhere from a minute up (unless for some odd reason you'd want Excite Bike playing in the main menu). Even if you just give us the option of the original menu music, Vertex Beta, and Mario Minor, I think a lot of people would be happy.
