Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two - COMPLETED

Hello folks, it's time for another Devonin-brand Critical Thinking FFR Tournament. I've learned from some things in the last tourney that could have been done better, and we've seen some things everybody liked that really worked, so I'm hoping this will be a much better tournament than last time.

The format is going to be a little different this time. Instead of puzzles leading to songs with typical score-on-song ranking, the focus of this tournament will be on thinking critically about the best way to achieve a non-specific goal. You won't be told what songs to play or even how to play them. You'll have a goal to aim for (Something like..."The largest number of averages on one song") and it will be up to you to decide the best song to use, and the best way to achieve the stated goal.

Interspersed in the song rounds will be a number of puzzle rounds more similar to the style of question in my last tourney. I imagine I will have 2/1/2/1/2/1 song rounds/puzzle rounds, plus a round 10 grand finale. That means 6 song rounds, 3 puzzle rounds, and a final 10th round.

I'll post a round every two days, over 20 days, trying to push the post time ahead by about 2 hours each time to be fair to people outside my time zone (IE, one round at 4:00pm, the next round would be in 50 hours, at 6:00pm, then another 50 hours at 8:00pm, slowly working the post time around the clock)

Why would I need to worry about the time I posted my rounds? Well, like last time, any player can submit the answer to any round at any time from when it goes up until the end of the tournament, so time isn't a function there, but where time WILL factor in is a series of mental bonus rounds.

Most rounds will be accompanied by a smaller-scale mental challenge, either a small puzzle, or a task to be done via some sort of flash game online. There will be a flat bonus of points for completion at any time by anybody, but there will be a bonus given to the first three people to correctly submit the solution to the mental bonus, thus the desire to move the start time across the time zones.

So, to boil it down, what we're looking at is this:

10 rounds, 6 FFR-based, 3 Puzzle-based, 1 Grand finale. Most, all if I can manage it, rounds accompanied by a mental bonus with points for completion, and a bonus for speed.

Scoring will be in the Rubix/Tass style, the person in first for a given round will recieve 1000 points. Each place below that will score 90% of the points scored by the person ahead of them: 1000, 900, 810, 729, 656 etc.

Mental bonuses will usually be a flat 500 points, with a bonus probably 250/150/100 for the first three people to submit correct solutions.

Since the song rounds are designed to involve a reasonable amount of strategy, people who don't wish to give away how they are tackling the problem of the round are absolutely able to submit their entries via private message rather than posting them in the thread.

I'm going to post the first round of the tournament in three days on Wednesday, April 23rd at 4:00pm EST

Since anyone can submit rounds at any time, there is no need for a formal signup, but anybody who posts here that they want in will recieve a private message notification at the start of round 1 and 2.

Hopefully this works out to be an awesome and fun tournament that makes you really think.

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Part 2

You have until 11:59pm EST on Thursday the 15th to submit scores

Prize Pot 260,000 (I know it should have been more, but I put in 100k, and credit bug recalculations dumped me down to like...much less than that, so this is basically Ledwix's 240, Jerry's 10 and 10 more of my own)

      Code:
1 Tass tends to forgo credits
      2 60,000
      3 50,000
      4 40,000
      5 30,000
      6 20,000
      7 17,000
      8 15,000
      9 15,000
      10 13,000
Obviously I'll recalculate in the event that someone pulls ahead of Tass, and I'll also recalculate based on other people who want to forfiet a credit prize.

      Round 10! -Monday May 12th, 10:00am EST
      Part 1 Puzzles

There is a flat 200 points scored for each puzzle solved. Answers can be submitted via
Private message to me. Alternatively, if you've solved them all, you can include the
answers to all of the questions in Part 1 as your private message to solve Part 2
      Code:
      1. What is the missing letter in this grid? B, H, or J
              CUG
              FXD
              ?TJ

      2. Determine what is being done with the 4 outer numbers to arrive
at the inner number as a result in each example, once you've
determined that, determine what number replaces the ? in the
         4th set of numbers

         6 7 5 6 5 8 3 7
           40 39 77 ??
         4 2 4 3 9 1 5 3

      3. Find a 10-digit number, where the first figure defines the count
of zeros in this number the second figure the count of numeral 1
in this number etc. At the end the tenth numeral character expresses
the count of the numeral 9 in this number.

      4. You have 55 coins totaling $10.00. There are more nickels than
pennies, more dimes than nickels and more quarters than dimes.
How many of each coin do you have?

      5. A question about FFR is encoded here according to the mapping of
letters on a telephone, decode and then answer the question:
         2=ABC, 3=DEF, 4=GHI, 5=JKL, 6=MNO, 7=PRS, 8=TUV, 9=WXY, 0=QZ
As in, a '2' could be any of an A, B or C each time a 2 appears.

      Round 9

The diagram below represents a treasure map. The treasure is buried in the spot marked ***.
The other squares are labelled with compass directions, and numbers of paces. So if you landed
on a square labelled N2, your next step would be "North 2 spaces" etc. The problem is, the map
isn't clear about which of these squares is your starting point. You can only -land- on a given
square once, though you can pass overtop of them any number of times. You must figure out where
      the starting point is.

Don't be confused. This isn't a puzzle round, I've just taken the time to disguise exactly what the round actually is. Since it's still a song round, there's obviously no speed componant so don't feel rushed trying to figure this out, but of course, if you can't figure it out, I guess you won't know what to do on what to submit the round. (I'm hoping people submit scores before everyone has figured it out just for the fun of going "your score is 10? 10 what?!?!")

These tiles, if placed in the correct order will form a square where each horizontal
line will be identical to one vertical line. Assemble the square.

To clarify, I mean that while there may be multiple ways to assemble those tiles into a square, the square is solved correctly if for each of the 8-digit rows matches up left to right, with one of the 8-digit columns top to bottom.

So if one row is 12345678 then one column will be
      1
      2
      3
      4

In these long division problems, letters have been substituted for numbers.
Determine the value of each letter, then arrange the letters in order from
      0-9 and they'll spell a word.

For 500 points, with the usual 250/150/100 bonus for the first three correct
submissions, you can send me in all the math if you like, but simply the
      list of words is sufficient.

In case it isn't clear, each question has a self-contained substitution. An E in one problem won't be the same number as in other problems.

Get the most perfects you can in under 8 minutes of song.
IE. The total length of all songs submitted MUST be 8:00 or less.
Ranked in order of most perfects.

Edit: Some questions that have come up: The total length of songs used in your submission must be 8 minutes or under. You can play them over whatever span of time you like. You must pass all the songs. You can use the same song more than once in adding your 8 minutes (IE. You could do a 2:00 song 4 times in a row)

Edit: My preferred method for you to submit your scores here would be for you to plan out your 8 minutes of song, do them one after the other, though since multiple runs of each may happen until you're satisfied, sending a screenshot of your ten "recent replays" (if you ended up with under 10 songs) would work, or alternatively, just some large number of final score screenshots is fine too, whatever is most convenient for you.

Scoring is 10 points per level completed with a bonus of 120 if you beat the whole thing.
Thus you can get between 10 and 480 points for completion, or 600 points to beat it.
250/150/100 point bonus to the first three players who submit the full beaten game.

Yes I know that Kongregate does save progress on this game, and so people who've been there
a long time and already beaten it could in fact just go to level 48 beat it and send in a
screenshot. However, people who do that have completely thrown fair competition out of the
window in a greed for points. The letter of the rule just says that you need a screenshot
confirming that you've beaten the last level to score the points, but the spirit of the rule
is clearly that you play from level 1 all the way through. I'm counting all screenshots I
get that show the last level cleared, and simply counting on your good sportsmanship to ensure
that you don't decide to cheat simply because you can.

Since puzzle rounds are either solvable or not, instead of the usual sliding scale of points for how well you score
the puzzle rounds will simply be worth a flat 500 points for completion, with 500 points also being awarded for
the first person to submit the correct solution, and 500*0.9 (The usual scale) in order as later people submit
the correct response. That way, since completion is all that matters, first places go to those who complete things
the fastest. So you'll have a better crack at getting the bonus if you're here right when the round goes up, but you
aren't completely screwed out of points if you happen to miss the start of the round. If this really pisses people off
then the alternative is just 1000 points if you do it, and 0 if you don't, which I really don't want to do.

Given the incredibly heavy workload the staff of FFR is labouring under, Synthlight was forced to cut each administrator down
to only one day off per week. Tasselfoot, MalDON, Plaguefox, Jasonkey and Nestlekwik got stuck taking Monday through Friday
as their respective days off. Between the five of them, their chosen ways to relax on their one day off were
Watching porn, Drinking whiskey, Crying quietly alone, Plotting a takeover, and playing Beach Volleyball.
From the clues listed below, can you determine which admin did what activity on which day off?

1/ Tass would take his day off later in the week than the plotter, but earlier than the cryer.

2/ Neither the Volleyball player, or MalDON's day off is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

3/ The admin who spent their time drinking whiskey would do so later in the week than Nestlekwik and earlier than JasonKey

4/ Plaguefox's day off was after the porn watcher, but neither would get monday or wednesday off.

5/ The cryer's day off is later in the week than the porn watcher, but before the whiskey drinker.

For 100 bonus points, post or submit via PM a screenshot of your having registered an account on Kongregate.com showing your username up in the corner, by preference matching your FFR account name, but it doesn't have to be. This is because there will be bonus rounds later that require you to play games found on that site, and by getting you to sign up now, with bonus points, it will make it much easier in later rounds to direct you to the site.

Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tourney Two

Well I put in 100,000 credits myself to start it off. Hopefully donations will be forthcoming and it will go up considerably. If a very large number of people are in and participating, I may be convinced to pony up some cash or other goodies as well.

I know Tass tends to get a lot of mileage out of bragging rights in this kind of tourney, so there's that as well.

ok. wat i really want would be a subscription. any length of subscription would be nice but credits are number 2 in the things i want out of FFR.

Read through everything. Only question I have is when you go to do a a task involving flash games, do you have a list of sites because some of them you need to sign up for.

                    Also, notification please.

Any game I use will either be playable with no need for signup, or at www.kongregate.com which you can all sign up for, and probably should anyway just because it's a great game site. I won't even pull a Tass and tell you all to sign up using my referrer link *grin*
