But if you always just render at DVD quality, is mastering required since everything else can be downsampled from it?

an audio engineer goes to school for years to become such. They are taught to hear the different frequencies and tiny nuances that you'd never hear yourself. Which even though you don't perceive the sounds your brain still hears them and adds to the overall quality of the mix.

Haha, I don't think you guys are giving me enough credit. I know and understand what an audio engineer does and what (though generally) occurs in the mastering process. But what I mean is that if you always render your project at DVD quality, if you would ever require compression (to say mp3 or ogg format), would you require mastering? Since the compression sequence is dependent on the encoder's algorithm, I don't see where mastering would fit in, unless you were talking about like optimizing the quality of an mp3, which seems like a giant hassle for a compressed quality anyways.

I can understand visiting an audio engineer for mastering a wav file, but I don't quite get why you would need one for any other format.
