Working on Hell's Foundry (no mastering yet)

I'm remaking the older version of a previous song of mine to see if I can do a better job of mastering, considering that I had no mastering methods and didn't know about the FL Mixer at that point. What do you guys think of the quality so far?

    Great progressions going on here!

I think your bass is a little muddy and overall your kit sounds a little unpolished (may want to use a kick with a little less backend, I think it's clipping your highs). There seems to be breaks in the bassline that don't sound on purpose, might want to extend the release on that synth a little bit and let the sound sort of blossom in rather than being so punchy. The volume levels seem ok in that I didn't hear anything clipping by itself, but your choice in mixing sounded a little odd, which could also add to the unpolished kit sound I referred to before.

Your lines sound pretty solid, but I thought the piece didn't really move me anywhere. Hope that helps any!

I have considered changing the kick. What kind of kick would you recommend (use detail)?

At this point I can't tell if you have a very tight sounding kick and a buzzy bassline on top of it, or just a distorted kick. Either way I think if you used a kick sample that thudded more from 50-75 hertz initially, you'll get a cleaner sound. Applying EQ so that it sits tight in the spectrum is also important.
