    Earthquake rocks southern Illinois

(CNN) -- People nearly 900 miles away felt a magnitude-5.2 earthquake that shook southern Illinois early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of major damage after the predawn quake, which struck at 4:36 a.m. (5:36 a.m. ET).
I was awake when this happened, on the 10th floor of my building. Let me tell you it was some extremely scary ****. It's not something we usually think about in Illinois, you know?

Apparently it was felt through a really huge radius, so it was pretty powerful. Anybody else happen to experience this, or was I the only one awake at that point?

People at my office all the way up in Madison, WI felt the earthquake. I wasn't awake at the time though.

Apparently we could even feel tremors in Southern Ontario.
        ( I didn't notice anything )

According to the article though, it could even be felt in Florida.
        So it's not that surprising.

Pretty scary though, to be so close.

Anywhere on the west coast really, but California is the center of the action. We're much more prone to earthquakes, and a 5.2 here isn't that big of a deal. On top of having earthquakes occurring more often, they're also less severe because the mountains absorb some of the shock from them. It takes a bigger earthquake to do more damage here then it would in Illinois/all of the eastern part of the country basically.

I've lived here for 17 years and I haven't experienced one earthquake. It's not that there haven't been plenty, they've probably been to small or happened at the wrong time. I actually kind of envy you guys, to be honest, I've always wanted to feel an earthquake. Well... as long as my house doesn't collapse

I'm pretty sure that I was awake for this, but if I did feel/hear anything I probably just passed it off as city noises.

I'm not too much older than you and I feel them quite often. It guess it depends on your location. And what I've found is the mountain don't absorb the shock as much as you think. If anything mountains are, for the most part, caused by quakes.

I felt this in Columbus, Ohio at approximately 5:40 this morning... It woke me up, I was pissed =( But yeah I had no idea what was going on, I actually thought someone was trying to break into my house lol. An earthquake was the last thing on my mind, let alone one from so far away.

Is it a sign of obsession that when I saw "Earthquake rocks southern..." as a thread title I thought it was going to be about "Southern Cross"?

Anyways, here in WA, earthquakes are few and far between. I've always wanted to experience one...

LOL, My mom asked if I felt the earthquake this morning. I thought is was a train. Then it happened again at school, and the music stands in orchestra were shaking, and a couple sheets of music fell of. Oh, and this was in St. Louis county, so we were kind of close.

I'm up in central IL and apparently we felt it at 4am, and people would not stop talking about it all day long. Quite annoying.
