If you can get either and not pay for them, Rock Band, mostly because it has a lot more content than GH.

If you have to pay, it's a toss up. GH has a much better guitar game IMO, but RB has a higher value overall. If you already have a GH controller for the 360, GH3 would definitely be the way to go in this case.

Rock Band. It rules for parties as long as you don't have a really loud obnoxious person there who wants to sing every time. GH3 still rules but overall I would say Rock Band is the overall better game because it has more features(drums, microphone).

Rock Band is overall a higher quality game. The guitar parts are definitely nowhere near as hard, but the charts are better quality. All of their difficulty comes from what is actually going on in the music, unlike GH3 which has all kinds of arbitrary notes and pseudo-difficult sections just for the hell of it. RB would definitely be just as hard (and with DLC it's coming close to GH3's difficulty) except for that they have to incorporate two other instruments, and it's hard to find 4-piece rock bands with equal parts for everybody.

Rock Band is a much better game overall, and the other instruments more than make up for the guitar's slacking (which isn't that much anyway). The drums are extremely fun (be prepared to mod them to make them work perfectly, but with a little help they work beautifully) and the vocals are surprisingly fun as well (not matter your ability level).

RB is simply much more enjoyable than GH3.

PS buy GH2 before GH3 anyway

what if me and my friends only want to play guitar on it, would rockband still be the better choice?

Guitar hero 3 if you want harder charts, but Rock Band if your interested in the Drums, because both have a very good music selection.

Guitar Hero for major guitar riffs, loose timing windows, and hard charts, cheaper and only for guitar.

Rock Band for quality charts, drums, customizable characters, and fun party game.

Which would you go for?

I strongly suggest rock band.
it's AMAZING.
Four instruments are far superior to one... and even if you only want to play guitar, it's still a great game.
who cares that it costs more? i think it's completely worth every penny!
