I had a bunch of friends who played a long time ago, but I haven't heard much about Yu-Gi-Oh! in quite some time. I'm totally not buying into GX, but the original pre-duelist Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series, back when it didn't revolve around cards, was the s***.

"Hey, there's this anime show kids like and a successful children's card game based off the anime. Why don't we do one better - make an anime show about the children's card game! That way we can directly feature the merchandise we want kids to beg their parents for in the show itself!"
I didn't even know what Yugioh was until I worked as a summer camp counselor in '06 and my 6 year old kids were fighting each other over cards. It was cute, reminded me of the time this kid lost his Revised Vesuvian Doppelganger back in '95 and freaking lost it, accusing everyone of stealing it and hitting random kids.
Um...as in the company that makes the game and thus runs all the major tournaments and gives out prizes and things, will often ban cards than in retrospect were too powerful.
They want the game to be balanced and fun, and if one combo of cards is so grossly overpowered that every single player basically has to use it or lose every game, it is better for the survivability of the game to simply ban the use of certain cards in tournament play to keep things a little more even.
For example, in Magic the gathering, the Vintage format has 12 banned cards and 48 restricted cards (You can normally have up to 4 copies of a card in your deck, you can only have 1 copy of a restricted card)
