    Artsy movies

Post here some artsy movies you have seen and discuss.

Personally my favorite is Pi, excellent movie.
Also from the same director, The Fountain, a very underrated movie that a lot of people hated because they didn't understand it.

Anything by Darren Aronofsky is brilliant. While it's more of a twisted style of art, check out any of Terry Gilliam's films

My sister told me requiem was a great movie but didn't tell me anything about it. So my then girlfriend and I rented it and watched it without knowing what it was about. Such a good choice for a romantic evening.

In terms of 'artsy' movies I've always like anything written and/or directed by Lars von Trier.

Oh, and The Celebration is great.

LMAO. You rented Requiem for a Dream for a romantic evening? I wonder how that turned out...heroine addicts..needles..amputations..prostitution.

Pi was an excellent movie and thanks for the suggestion of The Fountain. I'm torrenting that bia bia right now.

I don't what considers an "artsy" film but I'll list what I think is and were great artsy films:

Memento, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, K-Pax, Sweeney Todd, Crash, Donnie Darko, The Man from Earth, Babel, A Beautiful Mind, Twelve & Holding.

I'm sure there are more..those are just unorthodox films or films that could relate to being artsy. They were just listed off the top of my head.

The Fountain has three "stories" all at the same time, don't get confused.

Lost in Translation (razor thin plot, very little dialog, 50% eye candy/50% hip-indie music)

Darjeeling Limited/Royal Tenenbaums/Rushmore/Life Aquatic (Wes Anderson = hip-indie music, huge cast, crazy-ass family dynamics, drugs, suicide, and extremely articulate dialog that flies over the heads of most audience members).

                (Spoilers ahead for The Fountain)

joecool, I got around to seeing the Fountain and let me tell you...it was a pleasant surprise!

I really enjoyed it thoroughly and had to think through about 15 min after the movie ended to see how it really ended. It's all up to interpretation at that point and it ends open ended but here's my opinion:

                1) Tom's life as a doctor was the current & real life. The past Tom as a conquistador was the ending to Izzi's book. The future Tom is the spiritual representation of how he felt after Izzi dies.

In the beginning you see someone writing in Izzi's book. Then you see a continuation (perhaps Chapter 12, the ending chapter where Tom was to finish) of the past Tom as a conquistador. Then we see future Tom's character speaking to the tree of life (or Izzi, interchangeably) saying that he will save the tree which I think is the spiritual representation of Tom. This all directly relates to the current Tom as a surgeon. In the end, Tom is completely overwhelmed when he could have saved the tree (or Izzi) that his universe as he sees it is torn apart and is shown in the future Tom as the planet or star he's on explodes.

                OR (much simpler)

                2) Past Tom finds eternal life from the tree of life. Queen = Izzi. Tom turns into flowers and reincarnates into many different life forms until he becomes current Tom as a surgeon. He then finds cure to death again (eternal life) and it just recurs and recurs until future Tom where it seems to be millions of years into the future with the tree still representing Izzi.

Very in-depth movie with moving visuals. That was an awesome movie.

                9.5/10 most definitely.

Edit: or ugh. I just thought of this also..

Tom is a doctor in real life & Izzi has a tumor.

Tom is asked to finish Chapter 12 by Izzi.
Izzi wrote Chapters 1-11 and is obviously about past Tom about conquistadors and queen which is all fictional.
Tom then finishes Chapter 12 which is shown as future Tom but also spiritually represents Tom accepting Izzi's death and how he feels/felt about it.

Powerful movie indeed & very open ended.

You know when Izzi mentions Shebulba?
She talks to Tom about it, and points out a particular nebula.
That is where he is going in the "future" timeline.

Could you white out the spoilers? You know like this: I'm a white spoiler.

Also, was Darjeeling Limited actually good? And, does it have as good a soundtrack as his other movies?
