    Live recording devices and MIDI

Okay, I'm not one of the sound producer types. The closest I've ever done to sound production was use a sound board a few times (mind you, a really nice one) and I still don't know exactly what all of that technical jargon is (compressor? XLR?).

However, I am heavy on music theory. And I compose for and improvise on the piano.

My main instrument is my Yamaha P70. It's a nice keyboard and I'm probably not going to get anything infinitesimally better anytime soon. I also have a guitar and I'm hopefully going to have a violin by the end of the year.

My question: What equipment would I need to record decent quality sound? Anything from mics, pink/white noise generators, etc.

I would rather not invest in any music software like Reason or Fruity Loops.

My birthday is coming up in 4 weeks and I will be getting paid some decent cash at a gig in June. That'll be the majority of the money I will get to use unless I want to wait forever.

as far as recording piano goes, i personally prefer software, whether it be a VST like cubase or ableton, or a standalone like reason. The ability to use MIDI is unstoppable.
