What should I do: CD or mp3 (actually read the first post)?

If you haven't already seen my thread in the Jungle Gym about album sales, I've taken the advice that DJS gave me and I'm either giving my album out for free or I'm selling them for a freaking low price. Either way, the profits/donations are going toward my band account. I plan to keep it economical.

Anyway, I've been thinking about how I should give my media: On a CD, or mp3's through e-mail or other methods of internet contact. I'll post the pros and cons.

    CD

    Pros
-It's more convenient to sell them this way.
-It (in the least bit) keeps people from simply getting my music from someone who has already bought the album.

    Cons
-Costs more to buy a stomper, the graphics papers for printing, the CD's, and CD cases.
-I don't know if it's the CD burner or my crappy CD player, but my CD's eventually start glitching.

    mp3

    Pros

-It seems more up-to-date with today's standards (CD players appear to be declining)
-People can burn them to other CD's, their iPods, their computer, etc. Personally, listening to the music freely is what I want for my listeners.

    Cons
-People that act as if they haven't seen a computer in their lifetime might have trouble.
-Even if I tell them that they have all of my information, they might accuse me of fraud.

    What should I do?

But if you have cd's, they would be able to rip to an .mp3 file.

Why not both? Make CD's on request.

Either way this doesn't feel like solid a business to start.

EDIT:Nvm I thought you were selling any mp3's not a solo album.

Stand out... go with CD's otherwise you'll just be another band on the internet that falls into obscurity, if people have a hard copy of your music they may be more incline to take interest.

That's the best answer so far.

Anyone want to prove him wrong?

I don't have to. Where is the evidence that mp3 format makes people fade into obscurity? You can easily say that on the other hand, if you provide it as an mp3 download, it will spread across the internet much more quickly, and as an independent and unknown artist, you want exposure more than anything. To be honest, unless your material is so groundbreaking that it's viewed as the best thing to happen in the past decade, you can't be expecting to make that much money yet anyways.

So, my suggestion is this: setup an online store that offers mp3 downloads and charge a reasonable and even price for them. Offer hard copies in the store for those that want a physical copy, and make them as you need them. Then leak a couple of the most explosive and replayable tracks you have and try to get them out there.

I'm not even "famous" locally yet. I'm under the impression that CD's will probably work better for that.

I'm going to find some kind of event that my school band is holding -- may it be the sale of our equipment, some parent night, or even our annual car wash -- and try to set up shop there. In addition to giving them pamphlets with other freelance artist names on them (primarily those that are on my Friendspace, such as /DJS\, KgZ and DJNubbin), I'll encourage them to tell their other friends about me if they like my work. After this, the album will probably be released for free online. I don't want to make complete online CD/mp3 sales because it's rather early in my career for that.

Oh, sorry, I forgot that mp3 only runs at 128kbps. My fault.

Oh and PS - the cost and particularly exponential speed of distribution in mp3s eclipses CDs, especially when you're unsigned and don't have any methods of distribution other than yourself.

One more thing - I also forgot that there's no such thing as FLAC. Dear me, I must be out of my head.

This primarily why I'm basing this off of the plan that DJS told me -- either sell it for free or a significantly low price. I'll get the mp3's out eventually.

I guess I should process orders for preference of a .zip or a CD. That was the initial plan.

Except that the cost for mp3s is minimal if you want to sell it and completely free if you want to distribute it, not to mention much easier distribution.

If you give away CDs for free, you're losing time and money because of the cash it takes to buy the materials and produce the discs. If you offer your album with a digital booklet, they'll still get the same images, but you won't have to put in any extra time or money. You can have the same quality, and if they so strongly desire your product in physical form, you can offer that on demand. That way, you don't spend any extra money.

If you distribute the album online via mp3, you have the advantage of free promotion and advertising. A friend who has a friend will give it to a friend. Friends hundreds of miles apart can share things. Joe in California can send your album to Bob in New York, who can burn a disc and play it at parties there. You can put it on shareware sites and forums, and it's an exponential effect. When you limit yourself to physical form, you're limiting quantity and exposure, slowing the awareness of your product down, and wasting time and money.
                              .
