So, I just played Crysis on highest graphics settings and full framerate...

...and was actually pretty disappointed in the level of detail.

    Why?

Because just before I played it like that, I played it using all the original images, and enhanced graphics on top of that, something which only about ten boxes in the country can do.

Apparently, when making a game, the developers take original pictures and maps, then dumb them down to fit hardware specs so that most people can play it. This machine, however, had some software that removed all those effects and used the original images themselves. Not only that, though, at times the original images would be resampled to achieve even higher levels of detail.

For example, these are some shots of Crysis on a good gaming PC (most of which still can't even run it at full specs):

The detail on the shadows, the rocks, the gravel, and the foliage look as if they were watercolored over, and it still looks fantastic. Truth is, though, that it can be MUCH better.

If that weren't enough, I could have played it in full 3-D. The special TV (glasses-less) was unhooked, though, because the owner had to take it to a presentation tomorrow. It would only have run at about 25 FPS, but that'll be fixed after the final patch for Crysis comes out (we were testing 1.1).

Anyway, so I learned a lot about graphics and 3-D tonight. Well, I learned a lot about the burgeoning future of 3-D that I can't see...
