Muslim runner disqualified for keeping her faith?

Oh, and also, should this be in Chit Chat or Critical Thinking?

What the hell? Her uniform doesn't make her do any better, and the one-color rule is the biggest piece of crap I have ever heard. What's so bad about orange and blue? Does the blend of colors confuse the ref or something?

She deserves to run. "America"'s last words are "Let freedom ring", but the outrageous laws of today's society contradicts it.

Well, that's my opinion. Discuss here.

I'm not sure where the forum gods would want to put this, but I think it has potential in CT.

As far as my opinion, I found this disturbing. If the uniform does neither positively nor negatively affect her performance, then I think she should be allowed to continue to use it. I understand there are uniform regulations, but I think personal beliefs should be considered priority.
The weight of what I say depends on how you feel.

I think this belongs in CC, it seems to be opinion based
"First, they said she had to take her hood off," Sarah Kelly said. "Then, they said she can't have anything with logos displayed. Then, they said she had to turn it inside out. When I told them that there weren't any logos on it, they said she had to put a plain white T-shirt on over it."
Ok, so she puts on a t-shirt over it.

The outfit allows her to compete while adhering to her Muslim faith, which forbids displaying any skin other than her face and hands.
So now that argument is void isn't it?

EDIT: If this does fit in CT then feel free to delete this comment.

I think this would fit into CT, as long as we make the discussion a bit more...CT....ish.

How about posing the discussion as...

Should sports organisations be allowed to disqualify athletes due to activities required by genuine religious beliefs?

(This doesn't include things like.."well, I have my own personal religion that no one else practices, and it requires me to take steroids daily!")

Rogers said that he knew Kelly was wearing the uniform for religious reasons and that he offered her several options to conform to the rules while still respecting her faith, including placing a plain T-shirt over her unitard and then wearing her team uniform over it.
He offered her options and she refused.

I believe at this point, she's more angry about the fact that it was okay last year, and with no rule changes in effect, is not okay this year.

Her irrational anger cost her the chance to run in an event.

It's no fault but her own.

If there was no race involved in this predicament then it would not be so blown up. Rules are rules though...

That's right, if she weren't trying to run in a race, this never would have happened.

-.- Race is not the issue in question with this, but religion. I hope you aren't of the impression that all middle eastern people are of the Islamic faith, because if you are, you need to either remove that opinion from your brain, or remove yourself from this forum.

                  Oh, and Grandiagod...

                  While this is true...
It doesn't alter the fact that she was going to be disqualified in the first place because of the clothing restrictions in place.

Re: Muslim runner disqualified for keeping her faith?

It doesn't matter what faith she's adhering to, if the referee of a meet makes a demand of an athlete and that athlete refuses to comply, the ref has every right to disqualify her from her events. That's how sports work. Uniform codes are to be complied with at all times, and if they're not, then the participants risk the penalties.

Re: Muslim runner disqualified for keeping her faith?

While I feel bad for her, especially in light of it being okay (read: going unnoticed) for some years, I feel the ref had every right to disqualify her, at least while the rule stands. Now do I think the rule should be modified to allow this sort of uniform? Yes, as well.

Sorry guys, but this is pretty solidly CC material as it stands.

Uniforms are required to be "a single-solid color and unadorned, except for a single school name or insignia no more than 2 1/4 inches," he said.
The rules were stated beforehand and she willingly broke them.

Forget the faith argument. She's playing in someone else's league, she has to adhere to their standards.

I bet if there were no rules about not allowing dinosaurs on a basketball team, I could go back in time and train some dinosaurs to play basketball and bring them back to the present and take over the world.

                              Hahaha sigged.

And I'm starting to see both sides of the argument better. She should have followed the rules, but she's probably more pissed about shifting rules than the event itself.
