    Looking for a composer

In case none of you have actually read my signature, I'm making a game! Only problem is that I'm only a programmer. The art for my game that I make is basically a bunch of boxes and stick figures. The music I try to make for my game is the audio equivalent boxes and stick figures. D=

I'm not looking for anything final at all right now, but I figured I'd bring it up here to see if anybody is at all interested. I always keep links to the most recent video of my game in my signature, so give it a look see. It's just a standard shmup right now, but it will grow and evolve. Even the latest video doesn't show what all it can do, as I'm constantly adding to it.

Anywho, as for what I'd want in terms of music, what I REALLY want is orchestral stuff. The kind of music you hear in movies or World War 2 games. Practically every shmup ever made has fast moving techno music. If that's all you guys can give me, that's what I'll take, but some militaristic orchestral stuff would be soooooo much better.

Now, most of you I don't know very well, and given how little I've posted lately, most of you probably don't know me. However, certain names leap to mind (sleepless, draigun), and I demand that you at least try to make some insane orchestral stuff for me! The rest of you, I'm just asking nicely. =P

So if you're interested, please post saying so. If you wanna post something shmup-appropriate or an orchestral piece, please do. If you want more information about the game, its story, and what I expect, post or PM me all you want. I would suggest against trying to IM me, since I'm not always around, but I will always respond to PMs.

PS: This isn't a game I plan to sell, so don't expect monetary reimbursement. I AM, however, writing the game in XNA, which is part of Microsoft's lil scheme to make the "youtube of videogames" on X-Box Live. When I'm 100% done with the game I plan to submit a version for the 360, via the game upload/download center Microsoft is promising they'll make. Again, no revenue, but it sure wouldn't hurt to have your work get a lot of public attention.
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

I read the title of the post and the first paragraph and made something:

    sleeplessdragn - itch drips

Now I read the rest of the post and realized you wanted something orchestral. lol.

I would with Orkester but I can't stand Reason.

Maybe if I find out a way to access more than one sampler in Reason through ReWire.

I could develop some from that beginning, if you would like. Also, if you could post what kind of levels you need music for, it could help all of us with a style to fit.

            Re: Looking for a composer

how long do the songs need to be?
It varies. Main level songs oughta be a good size for a loop, about... under a minute or so? As long as it's not REALLY REPETITIVE it oughta be fine. Tracks for boss fights could be even shorter, since you don't hear them as long and repetition wouldn't be such a bother.

Also, if you could post what kind of levels you need music for, it could help all of us with a style to fit.
Well I haven't gotten a 100% list of all the environments you'll go through, but the game takes place throughout an entire solar system (aka: Delta Sector). There are icey planets, desert planets, jungle/swamp planets, sections in open space, asteroid fields, etc etc. I'll look in a minute and edit in a list of all the currently planned levels and the more about the mood for the music.

Is this the kind of music you're looking for?
            http://media.putfile.com/Assault-WIP
Hmmmm... *looks at more of your putfile stuff* Basic idea is right. Until the drums really start, it sounds like Legend of Zelda boss music or something. If you could combine that basic idea with more of the energy of Sunset 14 (random thing you also uploaded on putfile), that'd be good. Fast moving bass and drum really helps the energy of the game. Also, it'd be cool if some songs had like, trumpets and military-sounding drumrolls. =)

EDIT: Okay, level list. First, lemme introduce you to the quick map I've put together for the game and the planets it contains:

Every number+letter is a level (with a,b,c being various possible branches). You can kinda tell their makeup by the picture, but I'll write the details out:

1, 2b: Dry, rocky planet. In this first level, your forces are ambushed, so the level will start without music and then have fast paced "holy crap we're being attacked" music.
2a: This is the moon of the first planet. You're going on the offensive in this level, against some large artillery guns attacking the people on the first planet.
3: Entirely in-space level, you attack a huge force head-on, since they're coming for your allies. This will be one of a few large scale battles (lots of allies and enemies duking it out). Thus, it should have huge, epic music, if you know what I mean.
4: Battle on a space station. This is one of those where techno music might make more sense, because you'll be flying through a really technological place with lights blinking and wires showing and whatnot.
5: Icey planet. You're basically just attacking a big base here, so you're mainly flying solo with a few friendly bombers. The music here could be slower, since you're moving kinda slow, attacking static targets. Also, I'm sure guys know how some music just sounds.....cold, so that'd be good.
6: More on the icey planet, but you're getting attacked, so it's a lil more epic. Keep the chilly musical theme, but speed it up and make it more frantic, cuz you're under attack.
7a: Head-on assault on forces in space. Another somewhat epic battle.
7b: Stealthy night-time assault on a base. Quiet, sneaky music.
7c: Head-on ground assault on a base. Offensive, semi-epic music.
8aa:This one should probably have two tracks. It starts out as you on the offensive, but you get ambushed by space mines and enemy interceptors, so the music may take a dreadful tone by the end of the level.
8ab: This one is dreadful to begin with. It's you retreating after a terrible defeat in 7a. It could be frantic, as the level will speed up as you try to escape a bunch of from-behind attacks.
8ba: More people show up to help you in your nighttime assault. Sort of a victorious battle music, since your assault is going well.
8bb: Frantic music. Your stealthy attack didn't go well and the base is on alert. Sirens and pounding heartbeat-like drums would set the mood well.
8ca: Basically like 8ba. Your assault is going well.
8cb: Kinda like 8bb. Your assault falls through and you're escaping.
9aa: Somewhat frantic. You're being chased through the asteroid field at a fairly fast rate. Lots of dodging asteroids in front and enemies from behind.
9ab: Your forces seek shelter in the green planet (a gas giant) while being attacked relentless in waves. The green planet has high gravity and massive storms on its surface, so the whole level you (and other ships) will be being tossed around by the storms while fighting for your lives.
9ba: Your assault is good, but the enemy's backup is about to arrive. Kinda frantic music as you try to evade and destroy the forces sent to kill you. Level is mostly in space and the asteroid field.
9bb: You're backing up the guys inside the planet's atmosphere (level 9ab) by attacking the enemy forces before their waves launch against the planet. You can see the big battle going on on the planet's surface as you take on lots of waves of enemies.
9ca: You warp back to the icey planet and take off to avenge the failure of the attack in level 8aa. Somewhat vengeful music, kinda sad, because all those guys died before and you wanna get the enemies back for it. >=(
            9cb: Very much like 9bb, but instead of semi-stealthy it's head-on attacks.
10a: Another major space station attack.
10b: You repel the attacks on the green planet. Victorious cheers from your allies, followed by your men blasting through the asteroid field and getting ready to attack the two little twin planets.
11a: Desert planet with reddish sand. This is the biggest, most epic battle yet. Tons of allied forces convening on a bunch of really desperate enemies. Huge ground/air battle goes on. =D
11b: Watery planet with lots of little islands. Islandy/watery music to accompany the air battle here.
12a: You go underground and fight in the network of caves under the desert. Ominous, echoey cave music here.
12b: This is the jungle/swamp level. Sneaky enemies and stuff blocking your view.

In general, if I had to describe the game in one word, it'd be: EPIC. Lots of the music should be epic, since the battles going on will be friggin epic. That's why I want big orchestral stuff, cuz orchestras are EPIC. =D

Also, there will need to be some music that isn't in-game. Like for the menu, or in any cutscenes that might be in the game.

PS: When I make music, I make stuff like this: http://media.putfile.com/militaryish-music

Not very good, no melody, but you get the idea. =P

              Re: Looking for a composer

By the way, how do you code a song so it would loop back to a certain point, so it becomes never ending?
I need to look into this more. I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I'd have to be careful. I can't just time it right in the game, since if the player uses the hyperdrive (which slows down everything) it'd mess up the syncing of the music. I think you can set loop points in the music programatically (if that's a word), but if not (or if I seriously can't figure out how) I could rig something up to work right. If needed, I may need to get the song split up into a few parts, but I'll get to that once I figure things out completely.

I can make some baroque/romantic-esque MIDIs, but my resources are a bit limited so I couldn't pull it together.

Well if you made sweet MIDIs other people could throw them into FL or whatever they use and make them snazzy. Collaboration is your friend.

Long time no post. BUT I AM STILL WORKING!! =P

For those of you that wanted a better idea of what the music should sound like, check out this video:

Notice the extreme lack of music. Something that would fit the ridiculous action would be nice. Also note, most of the video is slowed down to better show all the weapons in action. Pretty much the only full-speed things are when it's first showing the weapons at various levels. But imagine fighting tons of stuff at that speed with that amount of crap flying around, all with fog and rain and lightning storms sometimes, and allies screaming that they need help. Music to fit that.

Also, I would like to thank those of you that have offered up some music already. Hopefully when it's all done the game will be a big success and it'll help us all out. =)

FFRPG? I say continue it. I know how much work it takes to make something, and now that you are so far in to it, all the enemies and weapons are tested out, all you really need are new maps, new enemies, some bosses, and some music. So don't give up now.

Lol I can compose somewhat... but not orchestral =(
