    I need some help

ANY HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS OR LINKS TO SIMILAR CASES WILL BE REWARDED WITH CREDITS.

K I know this isn't the right site to post this, but I don't really use any other forums so i'll give this a go here. I need some opinions on what i should do.

So Yesterday I was out snowboarding with 3 friends, 2 male and 1 female, at a local hill. Near the end of the day, me and male friend 1 were still riding, while male friend 2 and female friend were in the lobby. I had left my car keys in my coat in the lobby, which I wasn't wearing cause it was nice out.

So we finally stop riding, me and male friend 1 find out that the other 2 moved my car while we were riding to a closer spot. I didn't think anything of this.

Now the very next morning, i get a call from a police officer. I find out my car was witnessed hitting another car sometime around 4-5pm yesterday. He says he's gonna call my mom and talk to her (Since I'm only 17 and the car is under her name). So as soon as he hangs up, I call both my friends who moved my car. Now they swear they didn't hit anything, and I've known them for a long time I can't see them lying to me. Plus it was the FEMALE friend that moved the car.

Now here's the witnesses claim. a MALE driver backed up into a parked car with no one in it. The witness then came over and supposedly spoke to the male driver, who then drove off. I'm looking at 1000 dollars fine, a criminal record for fleeing a crime scene, and 5 years removal of my license (I live in Canada).

So when i called my friends, the first thing i asked them both before i explained the situation was WHO WAS DRIVING. They both said it was my female friend. Now the witness claims it was a MALE driver who they had spoken with.

The only other male driver all day was me. I am over 99% sure I didn't hit anything all day, I am a very responsible driver. If the witness had just reported they saw the accident, and called it in, I would have been baffled, but would have accepted that maybe i did hit something, and bought out the claim.

See thats my other option, If I buy out the claim, for a few hundred dollars, I keep my license, and theres no criminal record. But the part that makes the whole situation complete bull**** is apperently the witness came over and SPOKE WITH THE MALE DRIVER, and then the male driver just drove off. No one spoke with me. I just don't understand how this is happening, It's complete and utter bull****. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of, maybe a witness struck the parked vehicle, looked around, saw my license plate, and reported it. This seems pretty out there, but the whole situation is pretty baffling. What should i do?

    Re: I need some help

Although this isn't the right place to put this thread, I'll give you my opinion before this is locked. You shouldn't have let your friends move your car in the first place. Although it's true they're your good friends, people tend to bend the truth in order to save themselves. Your friends could have said the girl was driving in order to protect their other friend, the guy.

By having your friends take the keys to your car, you pretty much gave away your responsibilities of that car to them (wow I sound like a parent). And isn't kind of rude for your friends to just take your keys? I'd be pretty pissed. Especially if, the next day, I'm getting a fine, criminal record, and suspension. Buy out the claim and keep your license, you wouldn't want to go 5 years without it. Better talk to your "friends."

      Re: I need some help

I posted that pretty quickly, I'll add some more information.

We'll call the female friend Sarah and the male friend John, the two who moved the car.
I have known Sarah since grade 2, she's one of my closest friends, we've dated, and i know i can trust her. John on the other hand, i hardly know, and he just tagged along to come snowboard. SARAH DIDN'T KNOW JOHN UNTIL YESTERDAY. Now they both told me it was Sarah driving, not john, and the witness claims it was a MALE driver. Sarah has absolutely no reason to lie if John was really driving, so it didnt happen when they moved the car. This rules out my friends crashing being an option.

Also i've discussed it with everyone, and the spot the car was parked in had no one in front of us. We simply PULLED FORWARD out of it and left. Now the witness claims we BACKED UP into another car. While I can't remember if there was a car behind us, We absolutely did not go backwards.

I've been researching this over the internet for the last few hours, and i've found literally identical cases. I believe this to be auto insurance fraud, I plan on getting an attorney and getting to the bottom of this.

Maybe a person could've taken the keys from your coat jacket, then drove into a car, taked to a witness and ran off.

            Re: I need some help

plausible but very very very unlikely. The car keys were inside the coat jacket, which was inside my friends snowboard case, which was zipped up and looked empty. There were plenty of other coats in view, i don't see why a criminal would pick a snowboard case to look through.

Other reasons this doesn't make sense:
            1) my wallet was in the same pocket with 200+ dollars in it. This was untouched.
            2) Besides the friends i drove there, other friends came and met us. At least 1 person was in view of our gear 90% of the time.
            3) Why wouldn't they have just stole the car? Why stop and talk to a witness?

Still, something i hadn't thought of, im sending you 1k credits

Twisted story man. So if the witness claims he/she spoke with a male driver, but your two friends claim the female was driving, this leads me to believe that the male that was in the car, whom you hardly know, me have convinced your female friend not to say anything. I know that probably sounds outrageous, but its the only thing that really makes sense.

Then again, the witness could have provided false information. If you feel you can really trust your two friends, and they said the female was driving, then this sounds like the more logical conclusion.

Edit: And this is deffinetly not critical thinking.

                Re: I need some help

I do trust my female friend entirely, I told her how serious this is, i know she isn't lying to me.

As for the witness lying, yeah that's clearly whats happening here. I just don't know how to go about proving it. You pretty much just told me what i knew already, sorry no credits here.

I decided to post this in critical thinking because i figure people who post here are good at analysing situations and might have some valid input to help me out. Like you said, it's a twisted situation, and involves some serious thinking to figure out how to best handle it, seeing as how the outcome of this will hugely affect my life.

I suppose if nothing else the discussion here could be about whether i should admit to a crime i didn't do with lesser consequences, or fight it as best as i can, and if i lose suffer much worse consequences. I do believe this merits critical thinking.

Haha I'm not really looking for credits, I'm just providing some outside imput. I really don't know what else to tell you though, did the witness have any pictures? If not then this sounds like a long court case...

                    Re: I need some help

I figure if i can find a way to link the car owner and the witness together, perhaps co-workers or friends of some sort, then I'll be immidiately in the clear. There's no pictures as far as i know, but i'm pretty sure someone will eventually look at both cars. This police officer i spoke with was very rude with me, I couldn't get many answers out of him.

                      Re: I need some help

Sorry, after reading your second post with more info, this makes more sense. So, your friends say that when they went to move the car, they didn't even switch into reverse, they just pulled foward. The witness on the other hand says that the car pulled back, hit the car behind where you were parked, then pulled foward again and left the lot.

The first question I have is, the witness that made this claim, was it this persons car that got hit, or was she reporting someone else's vehicle? Also, if this witness knew anything about auto accident procedures, he/she would know that the first thing you do is take pictures. Without pictures, the witness has no proof.

re-posted in chit chat because theres more traffic there...sully you are misunderstanding the situation.

the car that supposedly got hit had no one in it, and a "third party witness" who "doesn't know" the owner of the car that got hit, was the one who filed the police report.

Unless your car is damaged or there is any other concrete evidence of an accident it becomes a he says she says case. They don't prosecute those.
