    Devonin's Critical Thinking Tournament (COMPLETED)

    So I figured I'd finally try my hand at putting a tournament together, and what more appropriate way to do so than to meld my love of FFR with my love of CT.

    Let me just say now that I have no intention of starting this tournament before January. I'm off visiting family for the holidays and I simply won't have the time to dedicate to running this particular type of tournament. Expect a start date some time in and around the 5th of January give or take.

    As should be expected, this tournament is going to differ in a lot of ways from traditional tourneys. I'll give you a run-down of the plan.

    1/ Signups will start from this post until the tourney ends. Yes, you could even sign up on the last day, and just whore whore whore the songs.

    2/ There are no skill level categories in this tourney. You'll see why in a minute, but I'm not seperating anybody into categories by skill, nor will there be a linear scale of "the songs get harder every round" This will all make sense in a minute.

    3/ Prizes will cascade as far down the list as I can manage. I don't have much by way of credits myself, but if I get sufficient donations, I'd like to see maybe a first prize of 20 or 30k credits, and it will scale down as far as I can go. If I happen to get millions like Phynx or something, prizes will get bigger obviously, but if at least the top 50% of all entrants win -something- then I'm happy.

    The tournament is going to go like this:

    On the first day of each round, I'm not posting what song you play. I'm posting a riddle, problem or puzzle that, if solved correctly, will tell you which song to play. The 'round' will last for 2 full days (If it goes up at 11:59pm monday, you'll have all day tuesday/wednesday [ending 11:59pm Wednesday]) during which time you will submit By private forum message only your answer and how you arrived at it. You will not be posting any song scores at this point, even if you solved the song (feel free to be playing and saving screenies though)

    Points will be awarded to people based on the order in which they submitted the correct solution to the problem to determine which song is the song for the round.

    At the end of the "round" (2 days after posting) I will post the solution to the puzzle, and the name of the song to be played for that round, as well as the new riddle for the new round. You will then have the entire duration of the tourney to submit scores for the song, via the usual method of screenshots here or PM'd.

    Points will be awarded to people based on the ranking they have on the song compared to all other participants (numbering like levelranks do)

    So as an example, assume we have 5 people taking part in the tourney. I'll post my riddle, and award points along the lines of
    first: 5 points
    2-3rd: 3 points
    4-5th: 1 point

    In order of submission of riddle solution. Standings read

    Player A: 5 points
    Player B: 3 points
    Player C: 3 points
    Player D: 1 point
    Player E: 1 point

    Then at the end of the two days, I post the answer, the song, and the next riddle. They begin submitting scores. Points will be awarded by rank like

    1 -> 5 points
    2-3 -> 3 points
    4-5+ -> 1 point

    So if player A and D both submit a AAA, player B submits a BF, player C submits X-3-0-0-0 and Player E submits X-20-12-1-5, their ranks will look like this:

    1 Player A -> 5 points
    1 Player D -> 5 points
    3 Player B -> 3 points
    4 Player C -> 1 point
    5 Player E -> 1 point

    Since the numerical rankings work like levelranks do, If someone new, player F submitted a AAA, they would also be rank 1, scoring 5 points, which would push player B down to rank 4, leaving him with only 4 points and so on.

    In the above example, the current total score would be
    Player A: 10 points
    Player B: 6 points
    Player D: 6 point
    Player C: 4 points
    Player E: 2 point

    As I said, anyone can sign up at any time during the tourney, and will be awarded song points for songs from previous rounds if they submit on them, as well as riddle points from all rounds after they join. However, once I've posted the song and the solution to the riddle, no further points will be given out for solving the riddle. You can join at any time, and get riddle points from then on, but if you join late, you lose out on riddle points from earlier rounds.

    I'm figuring on something around 10 rounds, Depending on how many really good puzzles I can come up with between now and then, it may go longer, but since riddles don't take whoring, and you can submit songs at any point, this is the kind of tourney that can easily let you work it into the rest of your schedule. And with enough rounds, missing one won't necessarily eliminate you at all.

    With equal points being awarded for being the first to answer the puzzle and scoring a AAA on the song, anyone of any skill level has a chance to win this. I'm hoping to get a reasonably large prize pot so that as many people as possible can win something worthwhile. I'm tired of all these "60 people, but only top 3 get prizes" tourneys.

    Winning might not get you 500k, but not winning might still get you 5 or 10k for the effort.

    Code:
    Puzzle Scores        Song Scores

    [U][B]Order [/B][/u]               [u][B]Levelrank  Points[/B][/u]
    [u][B]Submitted[/B][/u][B]  [u]Points[/u][/B][u][/U]
    1 ->     5 points    1 ->     5 points
    2-9 ->   4 points    2-6 ->   4 points
    10-19 -> 3 points    7-14 ->  3 points
    20-29 -> 2 points    15-19->  2 points
    30+ ->   1 point     20+ ->   1 point

    Re: Devonin's Critical Thinking Tournament

    A note about submissions. All riddle rounds are to have their answers submitted by PRIVATE MESSAGE ONLY. Anyone posting anything in this thread about riddle solutions while the riddles are still active for point scoring is disqualified, instantly. People not taking part who post hints or answers about riddles will have whatever I can convince a mod to do them done to them. Since Tasselfoot is taking part in the tourney, he certainly has the power, if you post an answer and cost him points, to do bad things to you :P

    Song submissions need to be posted in this thread, screenshots, not replays. If for whatever reason you actually want to insist that you or your computer are incapable of pressing some buttons, pasting into a program that comes with every computer that has windows, and signing up for a free photobucket account, I will take links to replays that are visibly timestamped appropriately, though it might take me some time to update the scores.

    Round 1 Puzzle
    As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks, every sack had seven cats, every cat had seven kittens. Kittens, cats, sacks, wives, don't you just hate idiotic riddles where the solution just requires you to pick up on one random word to see the trick? It never says whether you come upon them walking the same way as you, walking the other direction, standing still, who knows whether they were also going to St Ives? He never even asks them.

    But here you are, standing around with some polygamist with a cat fetish, and here's me needing to give you some kind of puzzle or problem. Oh, and here's someone from the SPCA coming to slap those wives with animal cruelty fines. Looks like 20 dollars per animal in the sacks. That's going to be pricy. Especially when you consider that the whole purpose of the outing was to buy all those animals some little boots to keep them warm. The boots cost 5 dollars a pair for cats, and 3 dollars a pair for kittens.

    Once you know how much this day is going to cost them, and convert each digit in the total price to its corresponding letter of the alphabet, and then visit the profile sharing a name with that string of letters, you will see which song you are to play.

    Solution:
    1 man, 7 wives, 49 sacks
    343 cats 686 pairs of feet 3430 for boots
    2401 kittens 4802 pairs of feet 14406 for boots
    2744 animals 54880 fine

    54880 fine
    3430 cat boots
    14406 kitten boots

    72716 total cost

    For this round we move away from number manipulation, and into letter
    manipulation. The name of today's game is acrostics. For those of you
    who are unfamiliar, I'll give you a heads up. Below is a list of terms that
    all fit within the category listed above them. In each case, the letters
    have been substituted according to a consistant code. IE. If E=G, then
    for every word in the puzzle, every instance of E is a G. There is a
    seperate cipher for each of the two puzzles however.

    Once you've solved the two puzzles, the bolded letters will unscramble into the
    name of the round 2 song. For points, submit to me the completed decryptions as
    well as the name of the round two song.

    Round 3
    Code:
    This next round is going to test two things: Your knowledge of order of operations
     (which is nice and easy) and your ability to find information on the wonderful series
     of tubes that is the intertron.

    To start with, you get this mathematical equation:

    ((A+B)+(C+D)-(E-F))*((G*H-I)-(J+K+L))-((M+N+O)+(P*Q)) = R

    Now, in order to find out what numbers map to each of these variables, you will
    need to find out the following information:

    A= The year Isaac Newton was born in the Gregorian Calendar
    B= The atomic number of Argon
    C= The year of the end of the Chinese Han Dynasty
    D= The number things for which Jason Stathem has recieved actor credit (this includes voice acting, and things still filming)
    E= 73 degrees fahrenheit in kelvin (rounded to the nearest 1 (IE. 7.4 = 7 and 7.8 = 8)
    F= Age of actor/comedian Tom Green
    G= The month/day (Expressed as MMDD So January 9th would be '0109' or '109') of
    the Beatles first live American TV appearance
    H= The number of books written by Stephen King as Richard Bachman
    I= The maximum number of goods gettable to still earn 3 tier points on Sympathizer
    J= Devonin's score on profile chat word scramble (not word find)
    K= The number of cards in the 'Guildpact' expansion of the Magic the Gathering CCG
    L= The answer for variable F expressed in Quaternary
    M= The number seventeen in binary
    N= Jean Valjean's prisoner number
    O= Number of days of the reign of Pope John Paul II
    P= Number of light years away the star Betelguese is from earth
    Q= The year in which the first african american woman won a Best Actress Oscar Award
    R = The result of the formula containing A-Q
    S = Minimum distance in yards for a Par 3 on a golf course

    Once you have found all the information, plugged all the numbers into the formula
    and thus discovered what value 'R' has, you will take all the digits of 'R' and
    add them together (IE. if R=1534, then 1+5+3+4 = 13.  If R=9021, then 9+0+2+1 = 12)

    Once you have the final result, add 'S' to it.

    The resulting number is the song ID of this round's song. When you submit your
    answer, please include at least the formula with all values filled in, and if your
    final result is incorrect, I will respond as soon as I can with which section out
    of A-F, G-L, or M-Q you made how many mistakes in, giving you the chance to re-check
    and correct your values. If you just send me a song title, and it is wrong, all
    you'll get is "Sorry, wrong"

    Solution
    ((A+B)+(C+D)-(E-F))*((G*H-I)-(J+K+L))-((M+N+O)+(P*Q))
    ((1643+18)+(220+24)-(296-36))*((209*7-50)-(468+165+210))-((10001+24601+9665)+(427*2002))
    ((1661)+(244)-(260))*((1413)-(843))-((44267)+(854854))
    (1645)*(570)-(899,121)

    Round 4 Puzzle
    Code:
    Here's a nice little word puzzle for you to work with for this round.
    Here's how it works. You've been provided with a 10-letter word and
    a number of smaller words with letters missing. You'll put letters
    from the larger word into the smaller words to form proper words. Each
    letter of the larger words will be used only once.

    When you've done that you'll notice that you have one letter left over.
    Once you've completed all eleven puzzles, the 11 leftover letters will anagram
    into three numbers (spelled out like five, two, seven etc) If you put those
    numbers in numerical order lowest to highest (So 7, 4, 1  = 147) you'll
    come up with the song ID of this round's song.

    For points, submit the list of words, as well as the name of the song. If,
    as can happen with word games, it somehow works out that there are mutiple
    correct solutions to a given puzzle, I will accept valid solutions as though
    they are the ones I had planned for.

    Round 5
    Code:
    The currency in Noonmoonland consists of only two kinds of coins -- one
    worth eleven buckadzoids and one worth twenty-three. This is usually not a
    problem, because if you want to pay, for example, one buckadzoid for a
    bottle of milk, you simply pay one "twenty-three" and get two "elevens" back.

    However, there are some issues with this system when it comes to ATMs. You
    cannot give change to an ATM, so you clearly cannot withdraw three, five or
    nine buckazoids, but you could withdraw 22, 34 or 46 buckazoids.

    Now, the question is -- what is the [b]largest[/b] amount (expressed in whole
    buckadzoids) you [b]cannot[/b] withdraw from the ATM?

    That amount will be the song ID of this round's song. For points, submit to me
    the name of the song.

    The solution as described to me (inexact unfortunately)
    A special-case version for 11 and 23:

    It's clear that 219 cannot be paid, one simply needs to examine the
    possibilities of paying with 0, 1, 2, 3, .. up to 9 coins of the value 23.
    As the resulting amount would never be a multiple of 11, it cannot be paid.

    Now, let's see why every amount higher than 219 can be paid.
    220 = 20*11 + 0*23
    221 = 18*11 + 1*23
    222 = 16*11 + 2*23
    223 = 14*11 + 3*23
    224 = 12*11 + 4*23
    225 = 10*11 + 5*23
    226 = 8*11 + 6*23
    227 = 6*11 + 7*23
    228 = 4*11 + 8*23
    229 = 2*11 + 9*23
    230 = 0*11 + 10*23

    Now, any number higher than 230 can be paid by giving 11s until we reach one
    of the numbers listed above. The remaining sum can then be paid according to
    that table.

    This round's puzzle won't necessarily be hard to solve for the name
    of the song, but it might take a try or two to solve entirely correctly.
    I apologise in advance for the general ease of the problem, but once
    again I've had a really busy few days, and had to do a little bit of
    putting it together at the last minute. The next couple rounds should
    hopefully be of a little more depth.

    All you have to do is follow carefully all the directions listed below.
    If done properly, the output of these directions will indicate which
    song you are to play.

    For points, you need to show me the entire step-by-step outputs having
    performed each instruction correctly.

    1. Print the words FERRIS WHEEL
    2. Change HEEL to TOE
    3. Change the W to double L
    4. Insert an A between the L and T
    5. Delete the first and fifth letters
    6. Reverse the order of all the letters
    7. Place a C in the first position
    8. Move the fifth consonant four places to the left
    9. Add ER to the right of the T
    10. Reverse the order of the last two letters
    11. Move the last six letters, as is, to the front
    12. Switch the A and the O
    13. Double the first letter
    14. Insert an O into the ninth position
    15. Move the fifth letter to the front
    16. Drop the second vowel
    17. Delete the second E

    Code:
    Time for another numbers round. I'm going to provide you a number
    of equations full of variables. In each case you need to figure
    out what number belongs to each variable. There are six variables
    and each one maps onto a whole number between 1-6, no number is
    repeated, every number is used once.

    So for a given set of equations, each letter A-F connects to one
    and only one number 1-6. When you've solved each of the three
    sets of equations, you're going to add up the total value of each
    variable (So if A = 4, 5 and 1 in each of the three sets of problems
    then your result is A = 4+5+1; A=10)

    When you have the total value of each variable, apply them to the following:
    (D*C-A)*B = X
    X = The song ID of this round's song.

    B - F = C
    AF = D + C
    D + E = 9

    --------------

    B + A = E
    A + C = B + E
    C + E = D
    Note: In this equation, there being no F, F= The remaining unused number
    --------------

    E + D + C = 8
    C + A = 5
    B + D = A + E
    Note: In this equation, there being no F, F= The remaining unused number
    --------------

    For points, you need only submit the name of the song/ The song's ID
    but feel free to paste in the completed sets of equations too if you like.
    Solution

    A = 6, 3, 2 = 11
    B = 3, 1, 5 =  9
    C = 2, 2, 3 =  7
    D = 4, 6, 1 = 11
    E = 5, 4, 4 = 13
    F = 1, 5, 6 = 12

    Round 9 Puzzle
    Code:
    This round we go back to numbers and logic, and I have for you, a big
    collection of puzzles to work at. Once you've arrived at the correct
    solution for each one, the method of manipulating those results will
    show you the song ID of this round's song. For points you only need
    to submit the song ID and name of song, but like previous rounds, if
    you provide your work, I can tell you which puzzles you have errors in.

    To start with, these are your puzzles.

    1) Of those numbers whose English representation in capital letters
    consists only of straight lines, only one number has a value equal
    to the number of straight line segments required to write it out.
    What number is this? (For example: FIVE is made up only of straight
    lines but contains 10 lines in it. You're looking for a number whose
    value is the same as the number of lines contained within it)

    2) A number consisting of three different digits is subtracted from
    a number made up of the same digits in reverse order. The result consists
    of the same three digits in yet another order. What are the three numbers?

    3) Tasselfoot took a test that had 20 questions. The total grade was computed
    by awarding 10 points for each correct answer and deducting 5 points for each
    incorrect answer. He answered all 20 questions and received a score of 125.
    How many wrong answers did he have?

    4) Chardish and JasonKey are brothers. Nestlekwik is Chardish's son and 12
    years younger than his uncle. Chardish is twice as old as Nestlekwik.
    Four years ago, Chardish was the same age as JasonKey is now, and JasonKey
    was twice as old as his nephew. How old is Nestlekwik?

    Once you've solved all these problems, take each number present in an answer
    (NOTE: Each number, not each digit. If an answer were "3 and 5" you would
    count both 'three' and 'five' but if the answer were "17" you could count
    'seventeen' NOT 'one' and 'seven') and put them in alphabetical order.
    Once you've listed them alphabetically, take the first four numbers and
    apply this formula to them: (((1+2)*3)*4) (Where 1-4 are the first through
    fourth numbers listed alphabetically) The result is the song ID of this
    round's song.

    Solutions
    1) 29
    2) 4, 9, 5
    3) 5
    4) 16

    five
    five
    four
    nine
    sixteen
    twenty-nine

    (((5+5)*4)*9) = 360

    Round 10 Puzzle
    Code:
    I'm sure everyone is familiar with the type of knowledge puzzle that
    asks you to decode something like "365 D in a Y" which easily enough
    is days in a year. Now that would be no fun at all for something like
    the 10th and final round in a critical thinking tournament. So here's
    what we're going to do. I'm going to give you a reasonably large number
    of such puzzles, dealing with a whole variety of subjects. However, a
    number of them will be incorrect. They won't apply accurately to any
    piece of information that fits their clues. Your job is going to be to
    decode all of the ones that can be decoded, and identify all the ones that
    can't. When you add up the numbers provided in each wrong clue, you will
    arrive at the song ID for our 10th and final song.

    For points, the song ID and title are good enough as usual, but once again
    by providing your work, I can give some vaguely helpful hints on things
    you thought were fake that weren't, or vice versa. Chances are good that
    if you submit one as "fake" that is "real" I'll probably tell you and give
    you a general subject matter it belongs to, to make identifying it easier.
