Suggestion of max "Users currently playing."

As FFR continues to grow, I believe the servers were being destroyed by how many people there are who enjoy the game. It finally came to the attention to Tass, Synth, and all of the other admins of the site to upgrade the capacity the servers could hold. It use to be a little while ago, the community was impressed with nearly 3,000 people playing at any given moment. But now, I've noticed over 4,100 people online at once!

I'm not really sure if this traffic is once again causing the profile problems, but that's not the point. My suggestion is to have a new category under 'All game statistics' marking the highest amount of people online at any point during each day, but also a second to involve the record of all time. It's just an idea to keep FFR expanding to what our arrowish lives desire. :]

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated since FFR at this rate isn't seeming to die off any time soon.

That's nice to record hits for the public view. Just an interesting thing to look into I guess. However, FFR doesn't really need this. This is just some statistic, it doesn't help the game to expand in my point of view. But, if they wish to add this anyways, no one will be complaining.

I suppose it wouldn't help in anyway. But it would be interesting to see just how many people are on.

Holy crap... 7506??? Well, thats why it would be a nice idea. I bet there aren't many who knew at one point it got that many people. Any idea what caused the spike?

Bear in mind that as with any webforum, probably 75% of those "guests" are bots and spiders trolling through the forum gathering data.

There are, for example, a whole pile of instances of "Yahoo! Slurp Spider" logged onto the forum as we speak.

Well, I've never heard of those really. But do the guests even count? They aren't really "logged in"

the 7500 was an anomoly. but we had over 4800 on at peak earlier tonight, if not more. and i believe that is our record. possible we'll break 5000 this weekend, with it being a holiday and all. plus with the more widgets we get out there, the more traffic we'll see.

Though again, unless that is "logged on users" you're still generally seeing a sizable number that aren't actually people on the site.

Regarding widgets: do people loading up the widget on the band's myspace page count as someone on the FFR site?

incorrect.. Don't spout statements like that.. 75% where are you even getting your guesses? Web crawling bots are not counted. They are stripped out beforehand.

                        Cheers,

Re: Suggestion of max "Users currently playing."

The numbers are coming from having done admin work on other forums. A large number of "Guest" logons (Yes, "guest" not the ones that are specifically named as what type of bots they are) also turned out to be spiders and bots. While that number of 75% is almost certainly high for a site like this that has a lot of actual traffic, and thus a similar number of bot-types on this forum represent a smaller percentage as on a site with lower actual traffic, it looked to my perusal through the list of online accounts that they made up a reasonably large number.

Unless a lot of incidental accesses on the site represent a "guest login" in that total count, I do stand by a claim that at least a sizable number of the guest logons at any given time either aren't actual people on the forum, or hit the site just for a minute and moved along.

Of course, I'm acting under the assumption that guests logged onto the forum actully reflect logons to the forum and not just "any aspect of the site whatsoever" but when I go into a CT thread, and see 1 member and 13 guests watching the thread, I tend to assume that in fact not all 13 of those are humans with an interest in critical thinking but not in signing up for the forum.
