    My Friend Needs a Good Arguement

    A classmates dad who also happens to be the history/gym teacher at my school won't let his son play so many games because they are occult or unchristian. This guy is a hardcore Christian and actually argues extremely well. I have to agree with most of his morals and viewpoints but his view on fiction things...I have to strongly disagree with.

    Some examples:

    He can't play POKeMON because POKeMON like Alakazam (or something) draw power from the devil.

    Zelda isn't allowed because you have to capture souls like in Twilight princess with the tear things.

    Now he's allowed to play Halo just not anything fictional such as fictional regions again seen in Zelda. I'm making this because my friend really needs an argument because you can defiantly bet he will put up surprisingly great arguments.

      Re: My Friend Needs a Good Arguement

      If his son is old enough to play Halo, he must obviously be a mature enough age to understand that things that happen in a fantasy game are mere fantasy, and are and never have actually happened. Fantasy (or fiction) art and media is a great way to stretch your mind and your creativity without actually performing voodoo rituals in your own backyard.

      Also, creating a taboo atmosphere for it is only going to increase the child's desire and interest in it, such as why children giggle at the mentioning of the word "Penis" or "Vagina". It is taboo, and therefore sometimes entertaining just because of the risk, and sheer pleasure gained from it.

      My last argument for the subject would be that video games (and other media) are a form of entertainment, and no game truly has the power to change someone's way of thinking (especially with something as personal as a religion). The idea that a video game (or even several) could warp someone's entire point of view on something as sacred as religion is just silly and unethical. Even if the child grew up to have a passion for studying demons, drawing them, or whatever his heart desires, the lord would not frown upon this, because he (assuming this super dad is doing everything fine) will grow up to respect the lord above all.

      This man should sit his son down and talk with him about the content of the games he is allowing (or disallowing) his son to play, and the religious views he has on them. A precaution is all I think is necessary.

        The Pope said Pokemon was ok so you should play just fine.

          The Pope is Catholic though, I thought Catholics weren't allowed to masturbate.

          Oh hey that too. If your friend doesn't masturbate, tell him that he's allowed.

            Why aren't dinosaurs in the bible daddy?

            Christians believe that their children can be converted by playing certain games.. when the child has no idea what the hell they're talking about. They tend to push their kids away from religion by constantly telling them "No, because that thing is about the devil."

              Because you didn't look hard enough.

              'Behold Behemoth,
              which I made as I made you;
              he eats grass like an ox.
              Behold, his strength is in his loins,
              and his power in the muscles of his belly.
              He makes his tail stiff like a cedar;
              the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
              His bones are tubes of bronze,
              his limbs like bars of iron.
              He is the first of the works of God;
              let him who made him bring near his sword!
              For the mountains yield food for him
              where all the wild beast play.
              Under the lotus plant he lies,
              in the covert of the reeds and in the marsh.
              For his shade the lotus tree covers him
              the willows of the brook surround him.
              Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened;
              he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mough.
              Can one take him with hooks,
              or pierce his nose with a snare?'
              -Job 40:15-24

              There is a rumor that tail refers to penis in this passage. I've bold faced it for the perverts.

              Like I said earlier, the belief that someone can be so easily swayed from their own beliefs is just stupidity and/or fear. Silly Christian extremists and their ways of doing things.

                If his dad truly didn't want him playing video games they would become Amish.

                    The father needs to realize that he cannot confine his son forever. Similar things happen with college students (some, not all). Parents keep their kids away from all forms of parties, but when they finally are granted complete freedom, they pretty much go crazy with it. Parents should use their best intuition when raising a young child, but as the child grows up, it is up to them to choose what they believe. It is immature and stupid to try to create a child that lives and believes the exact same things as you. It's as plain as that. It's a touchy topic, but it's true.

                            He doesn't keep the kid cooped up and his dad is a great guy but he believes very strongly in his religion. Pretty much we need to convince him that POKeMON and Zelda is not unholy and occult.

                            So far I'm going with the games are entertainment and completely fictional. Probably heard it though...this guy is too good and arguing about this kind of stuff.

                              Well, you're not going to be able to convince him of that without convincing him to stop cherry picking bible verses and reading the bible literally.

                              I mean, the bible shouldn't be read literally. >__> Genesis, for example, shouldn't be taken as literal. It's missing the point entirely.

                              It's just a book anyway. You can tell it was written by fallible humans. For example, in Proverbs 30:5, it says every word of God is true, but then God proceeds to verbally deceive prophets several times in the book >__>
