To me, Devo seems to almost be known solely for their major hit, Whip It.
However, most of their BEST songs were not aired very often due to being controversial and too thought-provoking for the mainstream audience.
Here are a few of the best examples:
Song- It's a beautiful world. A song about how it's a beautiful world we live in... for you. Then it gets weird. Suddenly the happy images shift to images of war, famine, still mixed with a few happy images to keep the surreal effect. "It's a beautiful world... for you... it's not for me!"
Song- Freedom of choice. Besides Beautiful World, my personal favorite. "Freedom of choice is what you've got, freedom from choice is what you want!"
Song- Jocko Homo. Bad quality, so you might want to look up the lyrics. This song defines DEVO's name... devolution. "Monkey men all, in business suits!" It's also weird in that it's in 7/8 time.
Song- That's Good. About consumerism and material goods. "Everybody is just like you, it's true, everybody wants a good thing too!"
