    Commercialization of Christmas

Discuss. Personally, I'm an agnostic in a predominantly Roman Catholic family, and I've shied away from giving or receiving gifts and such during the holiday season.

What do you think about the supposed commercialization of Christmas? If it's not someone's birthday, what other reason could there be for everyone to celebrate, feast, and give gifts during that particular time?

... And that's all I got for the moment.

What part about celebrating the birth of Jesus should prevent you from spreading good cheer amongst friends and family by giving and receiving gifts?

If nothing else, it should be a celebration of at least bringing your family together.

      Re: Commercialization of Christmas

I think of Christmas as more of a "caring for each other" holiday rather than anything else. Gifts are still good to get, though I am partly agnostic.

        Re: Commercialization of Christmas

My idea of Christmas is getting time off from school and browsing the Internet all day. Being an atheist (as with my friends), we know that to us, the true meaning of Christmas is the above, and we are not obliged to give gifts or send cards.

This might end up dwelling in CT...

Guido almost never gives me a chance to respond to threads without posts that pretty much say "I agree with Guido."

Stores are afraid to even say Merry Christmas now because people are bitchin'. Now they have to say Happy Holidays.

And now I'm going to have to agree with xOberseRx, who agrees with Carbo, who agrees with Guildo, etc. etc. etc.
