Ok, so the craziest thing happen to me. I was up to do my final internship for school and I went to interview at about 4 places. I started to feel despair because I was already supposed to have started an internship and I was a week late in starting one and with no internship in sight I began to feel really hopeless. You see my major is fashion marketing management which is a.k.a. the business of fashion, not designing. A brief story of my life will explain where all this is going.
Brief Life story(as brief as I could make it
)- I went to an art high school and have been an artist all my life. My parents always wanted me to do something with my art talent so they kept pushing me in that direction. So when I was in high school I wasn't the greatest motivated person around. I was an average student. But applying to an art college is completely different that applying to a regular college in the way that you have to apply basically at the start of your senior year in h.s. So I applied late and every art school either was like no or it was too expensive for the ones I did get into. So I ended up applying to a college that didn't require a portfolio and had what I thought at the time was half fashion and half business. Which for the most part it is, but mostly more business oriented. Why I stayed at this college as opposed to transferring is because I want to eventually be an entrepreneur and open a small clothing boutique that custom makes clothes. I wanted to get back into drawing and things like that so my 1st internship(this internship wasn't exactly design it was more like assisting in running errands) which eventually turned into more responsibilities as started proving I have skills. I was actually hired after I was done with the internship and I started designing stuff for this small company but then the job laid everybody off and closed (
I miss having my own office). So this time for my internship I really wanted to get into a design internship. But with a degree such as mine it makes it really difficult to find something in design. My school is 75 years old and in the history of my school nobody ever had gotten a design internship without previously having a design degree from another school prior to joining my school since my school is a business school and teaches management. So finally through a series of events (another long story) I end up getting an interview for a small pattern making company and they wanted me to intern there! They would want me to help them make patterns which for those of you who are not familair with fashion, is not a literal pattern it's how clothes are sewn together. Oh and this small company makes clothes for places like wal-mart and k-mart and many more places I can't think of right now. (This was an internship I found on my own without my schools help) so my school calls me the same day and is like well we have this other internship for nautica. I was like whoa in the same freakin day?! So I went anyway even though it was last minute because its Nautica how can I refuse? I go to the interview and they tell me my main responsibilities would be to help assist in menswear design. So I was like yay but the problem was I couldn't choose between both internships because they both sounded really good. So I took them both
but I am at Nautica more times in a week. I just started and I am so happy to think that some of you guys out there could end up going to macy's and buying a pair of Nautica jeans that I designed. I made history in my school. Out of 75 years since being founded nobody has ever gotten design internship without having a previous degree in design. And not only did I get 1 design internship but I got 2
I really hope that those of you who took the time to read this really long paragraph or whatever you want to call it feel inspired not to give up on your dreams no matter what they are. I know most people on this site are still in high school. College is really different and you can change all your bad habits there. If anyone needs any advice on anything please let me know, I would be happy to help.
