Re: My dedication to the 8-bit world.
I just listened to that mario track.
You need a hell of a lot more distortion on that snare drum if you're going to roll it like that. You need to try to make it so you can distinguish every singe snare hit, so it just doesn't sound like a clump.
I also didn't see the melody going very many places. -

I feel lots of potential. You've got a good sense of that clicky percussion technique... it just needs lots of work and fine-tuning. While the snare doesn't necessarily need distortion on Mario's Mansion, you really need to make it stand out because it sounds just like the kick. A lot of these songs you made can really have something going with a bassline and some mad breaks, or even just slightly aggressive percussion.
While I have used Triforce, Peach and Toad plugins in older songs of mine, My Friend The Monster and Lovin' Lime Land, I really recommend giving YMCK's Magical 8bit Plug a go.. it's very raw and super versatile. It's in Zajac's vsti thread free to download.

Yea the tweakbench VSTs have thier limitations, but the magical 8 bit plug in can basically make anything. Also dont use SimSynth it's not a very good VST. I used to use it but I found out that it was a very repetive vst.Comment

Mario - That was music? Wow, you really need to have some melodies in there. Random buzzing snares with some random VG sounds doesn't really make for a great song. (Sorry, this was a bit harsh, but I really felt that this was poorly put together =/)
Intrusive Design - Okay, looks like you tried some melody work here. Good place to start. However, make something longer than one measure, and don't just repeat that same melody line over and over. Sounded more like a loop to me. The ending was really abrupt as well.
Smile - The main synth line went a bit high for my tastes, and it had no low sounds to balance it out. Also, you got to have more to a song than just that. One synth line with a little hat in the background really doesn't make for much.
Goodnight darling - Well, this is at least a little better. You have some semblence of a buildup in the beginning, and you have some kicks to drive it along. Needs some more stuff to flesh it out though. Like, a bass line would be really nice for starters.
Tranceplant - This sounds much more balanced. At least you have a synth and a lower bassline-ish sound. Definitely in the right direction. I'd suggest having a more defined melody line instead of the same few notes alternating. Also, more variety in patterns. I don't know, but I can't shake the feeling that some loop was used in this, at least at the end.
So yeah, really work on how you put your songs together. Make sure you have enough sounds to make a song feel "whole," while not having too much or too little. And for sure make decent melodies that are at least 4 bars long so they don't get *too* repetitive. Also, try to have some sort of progression to your songs, so they go somewhere at least. I don't know, I could say a lot, but that's probably what you need to work on first :PComment
