    God...fucking annoying parents!

Ok, we're getting a new computer (finally). But my dad...well, let's just say he's stingy. Anyway, what he likes to do is get a new computer every couple of years, then give us his old one (which is now crappy). This process has repeated since...forever, but finally after my months of begging, kicking and screaming at the crap computer he caved and agreed to buy me a new one (with a stingy price limit- $700). Also, it can't be HP (he doesn't like it) and it has to be off the shelf (he doesn't trust online purchases, and he likes the warrenties). But even though we finally decided on one, he's going down kicking and screaming. He's still under the impression that if we totally purged the HD and 'got rid of all that crap' as he puts it, it would run significantly faster. Let me tell you the specs of my comp:
    Intel Celeron 667 MHz
    64 megs DDR226 RAM
16 gig Maxtor HD (that's total, not what's left)
Intel Integrated graphics 82810 vid card
    Windows XP home...yadda yadda.
I went through and deleted everything but the essentials, defragged our comp twice, and (suprise, suprise) it still runs like crap. Freezes and locks up if I try to tell it to multitask the simplest of duties, and don't get me started on how long it takes SM to load...with my 80+ songs I can literally take a shower, come back and have it just start up (I've done it, too). Basically, I need you all to give me reasons why this computer is nothing more than a mechanical PAPERWEIGHT and my dad's reasoning of 'oh, just delete stuff, it'll run faster' is BULLSHIT.

OMFG, my parents are like that too. Deleting doesn't do bullshit, unless you've got some HUGE files on your comp. $700 hmm? Should get you a decent enough computer, and if you think it's still crap, just run some upgrades on it.

My parents were like that a few years ago and my old computer was bad, like windows 95, 2gb, pentium 1. see where i'm going? slow, errors, pathetic, school computers were better. I was begging my parents for a new computer, and you know what my dad's excuse was?

"If we get a faster computer it will just get errors faster"

Anyway in the end he decided since I play games a lot on there we'd get a better one and they'd take my old one for the family business. In the end they saw how terrible it was for business never mind games and have had a much better view on computers since.

My parents aren't like that. But then again, they know a lot about computers. :P

edit: For those of you who have parents who say stuff like
If we get a faster computer, it'll just get errors faster.
then you should sit them down and say "No, this is how it works." And explain how it works. And if you don't know how, ask me or one of the other uber computer people here.

My father asks me on any computer problems, purchases, etc. So we never have crap in our house. Most of the time we get good deals too.

My mom is thoroughly convinced that every single hacker on the internet is out to get me. I download probably 75 files a day (Not talking temp int. files, which are like 200 a page, like, actual downloads.), and guess what, not a single problem, besides maybe a tad of spyware that I can get off myself. On her comp, completely destroyed. Way to over-confident in norton. I went over, loaded some 'good' anti-virus stuff, found 212 major errors and 500+ minor. That helped quite a bit, off course theres still that whole "Whenever the screen saver comes up, capslock stays on until the comp restarts"... that ones got me lost.

im guessing building a computer isn't an option? where i am, with 700 bucks you can buy the seperate parts and build a really good computer yourself (assuming your keeping your monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc)

-When was the last time you were on www.windowsupdate.com ?
-Get Adaware 6.0 and use that.
-Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and clean that up. I can help you with that part.

You can right click on a service, go to properties, and set the Automatic/Manual/Disabled status there.

Are you talking to me? Done the first two on both comps. No need for the third on my new comp because there are no problems, and to lazy to do my mom's comp.

Just save up your money and buy your own computer instead of whining to have your dad give you one.

Reformatting the hard drive does improve performance. Especially on a windows machine that's been in use for a couple of years. So your dad isn't completely full of shit anti.
However, it's still a crap computer and your dad is being dumb for wanting to buy a computer off the shelf. AT LEAST convince him to order a dell. If he doesn't have faith in dell then he's a fucking retard (no offense ).
Normally I'm not one to advocate anything other than building a comp from scratch (comp I'm running now cost less than $1000, including monitor and speakers and printer and stuff, and it's a great machine) but in your dad's case, it would be a waste of time to try to convince him of this.

Build your own. That's what I did for under 700 and I'm happy with it.

It's a good thing my mom doesnt know anything about computers. That's how I convinced her we needed a new comp. The conversasion went like this:
Me: "Well, since you are starting your new business, you'll need your own comp right?"
Mother: "Yes. How about I get this Dell here for 700, and you can get the old one (only a year old by the way"
Me: "Well, I use the comp much more than you do. Plus...you are happy with the comp right now right?"
                            Mother: "Yeah."
Me: "then...how about you give me that 700 dollars and I'll build my own comp that is twice as good as that Dell. And then I'll re-format the old one so it is as if it were brand new."
                            Mother: "Okay."

                            The end.

lol.. my step dad took a comp class for like 3 weeks and he thinks he knows everything... he's just as dumb as my bro.. i defraged my hard drive today.. and guess what.. it didn't help... NONE.. i deleted over 12 gigs of shit out of my personal folder.. and still nothing.. im running a disk clean up now.. and hopeing for results.. but im not going to get them.. im just doing all this so i can say i did and not be lieing about it.. but yea..

Crombie... you just need to be a bargain shopper... im sure you could build your own decent computer for $700, then randomly buy parts that make it better.. like $100 part one month, $75 part the next.. that way your parents wont really care because everything will be spaced out and not have to be all up front..
