Did anyone get a chance to see this?

I don't know if I put this in the right forum but I thought it was interesting. I got this e-mail below-

Hi everyone: Be prepared to see two moons on the night of August 27th as Mars comes within 34.5 million miles of earth. Read the following.

    Hello Everyone!

Two moons on 27 August 2007

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287!!!

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

Did anyone see this? I looked out in my backyard n I didn't c nothing! All I saw was 1 moon.

If I remember correctly, this same thing was pulled last year.

Now that I actually read your post...

Haha. Just look at NASA's site for these kinds of things. Not random chain e-mails.

It's actually not true. I read about this a long time ago, and it turns out that Mars is just too far away to ever look that big. We would need to be either much, much closer, or have a huge Mars.

I mean think about it, if it's supposed will happen again in 280 years (2287), then it should have happened 280 years ago also. But there aren't any records of anything happening back then, because we most likely would of heard of them if it was something this big.

Re: Did anyone get a chance to see this?

Well than that takes care of that. I just got a random e-mail and I didn't really bother to look into it too much I just thought, hey it would be kinda cool if it did happen. *feels a bit disappointed*

Oh yeah and the reason why I thought it could be possible is because last year when I took astronomy class my professor gave hand-outs on a newspaper article that venus will be visible with the naked eye for like a day or something.

Yes, when I took Astronomy, my professor did that too.

When people say XX planet will be visible, they mean it'll be the size of a star among the backdrop of other stars, just very, very bright (or red in Mars's case). 'course, we can only ever see Mars and Venus without a telescope.

I thought it was a couple of years ago that Mars would be as close as it ever will, and even then it only looked a star with a red hue to it (which was really cool, but nothing moon-sized).
