    FFR legalized COPPA signout sheet.

I, like many other's out there, have been banned from the forums for being under the age of 13. Well I doubt all of them have found there way back by faxing/emailing ffr a signed out COPPA form. Well I think that FFR should make one and put it up somewhere around the sight, like in FAQ for age limit, I know people who are under the age of 13 who post smartly on the forums, and I know that thats not the problem, so I think that would come in handy.

COPPA= Child Online Privacy Protection Act.

I had a few ideas. And found one. This may work. Look it over.

That's a good idea, and good job finding a form.

Then again ... I don't want the forums flooded with 13 year-olds WHO TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE PROPER GRAMMAR.

You can only use this as a means to play the game if Synth decides he wants to make his site COPPA compliant.

      He has two choices:

1/ Find a way for people under 13 to prove they have parental permission, while at the same time compiling in legelese a fairly extensive document detailing precisely what personal information about those under 13 his site collects, the ways if any they will be used, and the assurences that no information will be shared/sold with outside sources

      or

2/ Not allowing those under 13 to use the site.

It seems pretty clear to me which choice Synth has made already.

devonin: we do allow users under 13 onto the site if they fill out and fax in a COPPA. we just have not made it very easy for them to do such at this current stage.

not my call as to how it's handled in the future, but, as you've said... it's pretty clear how we handle it currently.

There are plenty of 17 year-olds who post like that, too. I suppose it all comes down to the person.

I'm just a little confused. So if a child under 13 get this COPPA waiver then completely flames the forums and does the worst of things and all the jazz, how do you get the parents liable for it?

Exactly. I, myself, have been guessed at many ages over the internet, most of which are over 18. How old am I? 15. It just all comes down to maturity.

I'm actually not entirely sure that FFR -needs- to be COPPA compliant.

COPPA does not include any nonprofit entity that would otherwise be exempt from coverage under section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S.C. 45).

I'm unsure the extent to which soliciting donations counts as being a for-profit enterprise, but unless Synth is paying taxes as a corporation for any donations he intakes on the site, he may not actually qualify to be COPPA compliant at all.

If the parents don't sign it because they feel the same way about being UUA then its the parents decision, the kids wouldn't be able to fake the COPPA that easily.

If it is only a signed sheet of paper, it is incredibly easy to fake. you can get faxes sent for cheap at most any convenience store.

This is why many for-profit internet companies (at whom COPPA is aimed) only allow registrations and donations via credit card, because that implies parental consent by definition.
