Can't get referrals / My name's too long?

Yesterday I went to my cousin's house and told them about FFR and they were making an account. But when we got to the referrals section of the registration form, I told them to put "Blah" 6 times (24 characters) and they said it wouldn't fit in the referral's box. They were only able to put "Blah" 5 times (20 characters).

Is this because the username character limit was shortened?

And do referrals even do anything? -_-;

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out that after you type in the 5 "Blah"s, a little pop up thing asks about other screennames that are longer (like mine)

I guess it was just because we were using Mac's yesterday >_>..
