Trojan Horses - Getting rid of them

Alright, I was using my computer, watching anime and chatting and my AVG told me I had a Trojan Horse and that I should "heal" it. I did, restarted my computer, scanned for viruses (nothing at that time, and then continued with my life.

Now today, the same pop-up came up and I didn't even download anything today. It seems as though the thing was spreading. So I got rid of it, and started scanning my computer.

Then 15 minutes later (the scan is still going on), AVG told me that it had infected a file. This is definitely spreading. The problem is, I don't know how to stop it and get rid of it for good.

Any advice as to how to get rid of this Trojan for good?

My security programs are AVG Anti-Virus Free, AVG Anti-Spyware Free, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Run the stuff on there, it's free and the best computer protection I'VE ever used.
However I had a personal hacker on it at one point. It was fun, he would write to me in MS Word and stuff and I just talked to him and eventually got his "hacker codename" and searched it and got rid of him when he wasn't awake i suppose. Took about 24 hours of work to get him off of my computer, and what's weird is when the hacker was gone, there was a document on my desktop saying "Here's your computer back ". Very awkward and somewhar off topic, but related to the same junk.

Just goes to show that your computer is never totally safe. Trend should do the trick though.

Reformat your hard drive? Probably not what you want to do, but it would get rid of the trojan.

Reformatting is a last resort and I don't think it's necessary for a problem this small.

          That's funny and incredible.
Sorry, I just had to say that =p

Well if it continues to spread, it won't be a SMALL problem anymore.
If it got through all of your security programs, assuming they work, you might be at serious risk. =X

Did you get the pop up while browsing? Check your browser add-ons for suspicious item names such as the ones that list as bunches of random letters.
Some BHOs remain undetected by virus scans, but you might be able to find and delete them manually.

I'm pretty sure it was when I was focused on Firefox, but I don't think I was browsing. I did install some Firefox extensions that day. Also, how should I check my extensions? Inside "My Computer" or in the browser itself?

I'd check in "My Computer", but Firefox isn't easily infected. o.o

Man the arrows, they're not getting into the castle again with that damned horse!

Anyway, in all seriousness, have you tried googling the name of the trojan? See how other people have dealt with this problem in the past.

Re: Trojan Horses - Getting rid of them

Use ProcessExplorer (free program) and find out what threads the trojan is using, shut them down, and then kill the trojan. If it's using Winlogon.exe which you can't shut down, just use a move on boot utility and it'll be gone on next startup. Not difficult. And doesn't require expensive and irritating programs.

All anti-virus programs have done for me is cost me money and system performance. And when they actually did detect something, they could never remove it.

If that doesnt work do as said above and google the name of the virus also try the name of the virus followed by removal tool. Sometimes Symantec makes a d-loadable scanner and repair tool for trojans. If those do not help load setup from XP cd, DO NOT erase the partition but just install over it, leave file system intact. Then after you load xp and drivers back, your data will still be there but programs gone. Also d-load an anti virus install file before you do the reload os, so u can install AV and scan on a fresh install. We do this all the time at our shop and thats the best way if there is no removal tool available. If you want n extensive walkthrough just PM me

ROFL AVG, See that's your problem your using AVG, AVG sucks it just does don't use it. On another note I think almost every base is covered. I highly recommend you back up the files you want and are sure aren't infected onto a Flash drive, Mp3 player etc. so you don't have to redownload them again.
