That exact situation has never happened to me. However, I occasionally will mess around and get a melody going, only to soon discover it's a melody from a song I have or something.

Something like this happened to me and like some old 50's song. My friend pointed it out. Actually I was kind of proud of myself because I had written a progression that thousands and thousands of people thought were catchy back in the day. I personally think that music has to evolve from somewhere. However, plagiarism is something completely different.

Ok, this happened fairly recently with two tracks by Scott Brown and Gammer For comparison:

              Scott Brown-"Pro to Plasm"-http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF193702-01-02-01.mp3

              Gammer-"Bust"-http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=96472314
Yeah, a ripple went through the community, but, it eventually came down after everyone realized one thing: Grading melody composition judgment needs to be made from an unbiased standpoint. Gammer had an absolutely remarkable track, but, because it was so similar to Pro to Plasm, no one noticed, until the dust settled at least. You can always look back to that saying "Great minds think alike."
