Good to see you took my answers. Glad to have been of help.

Also, for future notice. The entire name of the book "The Bean Trees" is a euphemism for the horrible goings on in the book. The father is the tree and the children are the beans. His vicious attacks on them amalgamate into a huge cohesion of colour and light. The "beans" grow further from their "tree" and eventually settle somewhere else.

Pretty awesome book really. Very brutal.

Yeah, that's later on. You wanted to know about chapter 1, which I told you about. Also, the beans and stuff is the next couple of chapters. After that the children grow up but their oppressive father comes back to haunt them with threats of more raping.

At this point one of them has had a child and, fearing for her child's life, as she knows that her father would have no qualms about raping her child, she tries to run and gives her child to an Indian woman.

ohhh yea, and the father has sex with his daughter. and the daughter gets naughty and has sex with her daughter and the indian child has sex with a goat
