So my friends and I went to see Spiderman 3 tonight, but the show we wanted to see was sold out so we had 90 minutes to burn, so we headed down to the arcade by there to play a little DDR. Lo and behold they had upgraded to SN since last time I visited.
I had played SN once but back when I couldn't even pass 10s so it doesn't count.
Anyways, first impressions. My first thought was that the backgrounds are ****ing horrible, Note was difficult to play on a lot of times because of red or blue backgrounds (the Xephyr crossover 8th stream in the middle was nearly impossible for me to see). I then progressed to playing 10s for my 3rd and 4th round, where the life bar became ridiculous. I thought Extreme's was bad, but holy ****! It was just stupid, 2 misses in a row and you fail wtf. I then realized I couldn't read Note on doubled BPM stuff because of the blending in issue, couple that with old Extreme pads and it was pretty tough to play. I definitely prefer ITG over this crap. While it may be DDR's response to ITG, it fails to offer the sheer playability of ITG, where there's no bull**** messing with your skills.
The interface is much improved over Extreme I think, but it still could use a lot of work. The menus were better organized than that of Extreme, the noteskins were definitely much better, and the judgement display was much smoother and easier on the eyes, but the backgrounds just killed it for me. If I fail, I like it to be on my terms, not because I couldn't see a note and that is enough to take away half of my lifebar.
