This actually could be a good thread. Mainly because you asked something not a lot of people ask:

    "why?"

My favorite genres of music are UK and Dutch Hardcore, not to mention some bluegrass.

    Why, you ask? Funny story...

When I was growing up, I was absolutely surrounded by Bluegrass music. That fast, upbeat, 16 to 32nd note patterns intrigued me. I suppose the speed of that eventually carried over into my love of hardcore.

i like to listen to rock and alternative. why? because those types alot of the times are complex meaning that the songs make you think. it may either have a deep or somewhat simple meaning. i also like piano music. its soothing and calms me down.

I like a lot of genres so really it'll be tough to talk about them all. The main ones:

Prog - for various reasons depending on the genre. Symphonic / Art stuff because of the sheer awesome abilities of all the artists, the complex arrangements, the music, everything. Jazz because it's just awesome improvisation half the time. Prog Metal / Rock due to how insane it can sound at times, not always the best vocals but the instruments are insane. Avante-Garde because it's strange, different, and generally can be quite fun to listen to, if not a little difficult for most. Also Neo Prog due to how amazing the vocals are.

Metal - I just like metal of all types from prog to heavy to death to plain old metal. Generally is just good to listen to and once in a while I like heavy music blasting away.

Instrumental / Post Rock - Really relaxing at times and at other times you find yourself lost in the music with no words to focus on you just drift into the music. It ends up enveloping you.

          The rest - It's good.

I love classical music. Pianos mostly, but orchestral music and things like that are also good. I love string instruments and I hate wind instruments. I play the keyboard, the trumpet and the guitar. I play the trumpet for school and that is the only reason. I love the guitar and the keyboard is good too.

I love guitar. Any kind of guitar, except for guitars that are used for country. I hate country with a passion. 6-string standard tuned guitars are my favorite. I like Dethklok, from Adult Swim's Metalocalypse because of the guitar rhythms. The beat of the guitar and the drum goes perfectly. Some people might not appreciate the music (my dad), but most people love the guitar rhythms.

Re: Tipe of music you like...

Hip Hop - Depends on the song. Before I continue, I'd to remind current veterans (Mostly TGB members) and state to the newer members that yes, I am black. Original hip hop was basically poetry mixed with music. It took talent, real life experiences, a good knowledge of the English language and musical skills to put a song together, let alone attract a decent audience. They primarily told a hardship or expressed emotions Now, they don't even have to have the reading ability of a freshman in high school to rap, they can have someone else create the music for them without even writing a single note, and most hip-hop is about sex, money, drugs, and violence. Now, although I've come to like a select few songs of these subjects, the hip hop community is STILL embarassing.

I'll go ahead and rant for a moment. I'm sure that everyone has heard of the song "This Is Why I'm Hot" by Mims. Had I heard the rest of the song, I would've withered away and died, so I'm only going to break down the first verse.

To begin with, the chorus annoys you enough with constant repetitions of "This is why I'm hot." Then, after you want the words "This is why I'm hot" omitted from the English dictionary, he'll say,

              "I'm hot 'cause I'm fly
              you ain't 'cause you not."

Good god. He apparently doesn't know what it essentially translates down to:

              "I'm hot because I'm fly
you're not fly because you're not fly."

Although I'm still scratching my head about how he spends time writing his lyrics, I ask "Why is he fly, and how does that make him hot?" This might be deemed unecessary in criticizing his song, but I can't help but question it. Now onto the actual verse:

              "I don't gotta rap
I can get a mill' by saying nothing on the track"

Way to go, Mims. You've delved into the world of instrumentals, which you probably didn't even get involved with the writing of the music.

After a few bad lines, he'll say,

"But in the midwest we like to take it slow
So when I hit the H I like to get it on the floor"

I will give 500 credits to anyone who explains to me what an "H" is. It doesn't even fall under a slang term, like "Joc" or "Throwed", of which both have a reasonable definition. And how is this involved with "taking it slow"?

After making a huge disgrace of the Californian metropolitan areas, he'll say,

"Then I hit the Chi (He means Chicago), where they think that I'm fly
They love the way I dress, they like my attire
The way I move crowds from side to side
They ask me how I do it, and simply I reply
This is why I'm hot.....(Suicide inducing chorus continues)"

...........I couldn't think of a single gag for this set of lines. They ask him how he's so famous, and he states, "This is why I'm hot" which he still hasn't fully explained why he's hot.

Trust me Mims, you certainly aren't hot for being a lyricist. Onto other genres......

Latin/Reggae/Carribean - Music of Latin America and the Carribean are near perfect. They require talent, although fun and liberating; it's generally easy to find a beat to it and dance, and the dances are quite fun; a lot of this genre is mostly about having a good time. About the only reason not to like this genre is that some may not fully understand Spanish.

Electronic - I say electronic and not any of its subgenres due to the fact that some electronic songs carry out the generic stereotype - that many songs are repetitive and sound the same as the other. I'm glad to say that I primarily listen to the music of bemani artists, FFR artists and Blue Man Group, who show very little repetition.

There are also a few songs among other genres.

J-pop - It's fun to dance to, I love it!
New Wave - It has meaning behind it, is very cold and hard and has good melodies.
Early-Mid 90s alt-rock - It's angry. YAY! Also, a lot of it is very nice lyrically. I like how it's very raw and real.

I'll have to admit, the rock in the past is quite decent. But today, rock and its other subgenres/associated genres are crapped up if you ask me. I've probably used this before, but Black Parade by My Chemical Romance is a prime example.

You need to look around a little more. Bands like Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Wolverine, etc. are keeping rock alive.

This topic is interesting. You can really see who likes music for legitimate reason. I mean, seriously...

I listen to metal most of the time. So I'll ignore the other stuff I like for a bit.

To start, a distinction needs to be made between music which is entertainment and which is art. Sometimes it overlaps, but the point is I like each case for different reasons. Simply entertaining music is obvious. It's mostly subjective why I like it, and there's not much to say.

In a lot of power metal, this is the case. It's also the case on the other end of the spectrum with things like much brutal death metal. I mean, come on. It's not art. It doesn't bring anything new to the table. But damn it if it ain't headbangable. Damn it if there aren't some killer ****ing riffs to be made. There's more, but I'll leave it at that.

Still, there is artistic music, and that is probably more important. I can only listen to Korpiklaani or Krisiun or something for so long before getting quite tired of it. My favorite albums aren't simply "cool". It's not like all I care about is how "awesome" those guitar solos or whatever are. It's a lot more than that.

I often say that I find metal to be one of the most artistic and emotive genres of popular music I can find. Maybe I don't look hard enough, but that's not the issue. If you've ever sat down with a really great album like something by Gorguts or Ulver or whoever, you may know what I'm saying. (For the record, I don't intend to namedrop if this is coming off that way.)

In any case, I must say you've got to know what I'm saying. Immersion is the key. You can be fully immersed in those albums. You can feel something. That's important for art. These albums carry a lot of weight in ways that is not common elsewhere. Some of these death metal albums, gosh, you can feel the heaviness in the pit of your stomach. Like the album is positively crushing. Some of these black metal albums, gosh, you can feel the raw hatred. Some of these power metal albums, you can feel the empowerment and majesty.

They may cover topics not found very often elsewhere. I don't mean lyrically, though that may be the case. It's a mix, I suppose. It's not enough to sing, shriek or growl "Jesus sucks, rah rah rah." That's really only a supplement to the mood created by the music on the album. I suppose it helps that I generally agree that Jesus sucks, rah rah rah. But once again, it's more than that. It's about the overarching atmosphere of the whole thing.

I speak in terms of albums, as that's how I see sort of the basic unit of music. Songs are obviously more fundamental, but they're too individual to me. An entire band is the opposite, especially because it's not uncommon at all for bands to release both crappy albums and good ones in their lifetime.

In summary, I see my favorite music as art. There's nothing wrong with some basic entertainment. There's nothing wrong with music that simply kicks ass. However, it can only go so far. The best music truly has something to say and has the power to really move me. I find all this in metal music.

i like songs with much noise or multi-instrumental background. If you ask me why, the only answer i have is..i don't know, only i like it.
Some genres i like are the rock, the metal, electronic, and classic.

In general, I think I like atleast one song from most genres. This really helps, considering that I write music myself. I'll have to look up music genres and see if I've heard them.
