Why do people hold on to the safety bar often?

Whenever I watch people doing 7-9 footers they always hold on to the safety bar. I never hold on to it. Perhaps it is a platform for balance.
Many people today play DDR Extreme, DDR Supernova and later. But I still play 1st and 2nd mix in the arcades. Too bad for me.

    .

    PRESENT DAY
Man: I'm going to play DDR 1st Mix today.
Man 2: SO what? I'm playing Supernova 2 today.
Man: What the hell is Supernova?
Man 2: Go back to the 60's, noob.

It helps a lot of people. I've only played this stuff at home on StepMania without a bar, so I don't really know exactly how it would help so much, but I've heard about a lot of a lot of good scores where the person who got them admitted to "bar rape." I think it would help me a lot to have a bar, since I'm pretty much a DDR/ITG noob that has trouble finding where the arrows are on my pad without looking lol.

Some songs are physically impossible to do without using the bar. Personally...I only use it when no one is looking :X

Yeah, it helps on fast songs to keep my balance. Heck I'm not guilty abut using the bar at all, so don't even THINK about flaming me over this.

            Zack: Shut up. It's funny.

It also helps with PA, I wouldn't barrape a 7 or 8 footer normally, but in a tournament or something or if I'm going for a AAA definately because your not moving your body as much so you can focus more on hitting it accurately.

When you're connected to a stationary object (the bar) you move your center of gravity less. Less movement=less energy=more control and endurance.

7-9 foor songs with the bar is kinda dumb, because those songs are so easy.
10 foot and up is fine.

Well, some 9s are hard enough to use the bar.

And when you're not using more energy you are able to play more songs which = more fun!

I always play with the bar on all the ITG 10's, and then when I go and play SNCS, It's so disorientating.. I get sucked.

using the bar for anything in ddr is pointless, alot of people that use the bar on ddr are looked down upon as "bar rapers" i can understand using the bar in some songs on itg, but defianetely not ddr.

Playing DDR or ITG without the bar makes you look and play 1.5x better than playing with it after some rigorous practice. Think of bar hugging as a drug/handicap.
