    Sonic and the Secret Rings

Does anybody else think this game looks sweet? I only own the original few Sonic games on my PC (don't own a Sega console) and I'm not impressed by the newer 3D Sonic games, although I have played them. I think this game has a lot of potential. I just hope that the multiplayer is decent... either way I will probably still get Mario Party 8. And the one player mode looks like it will more than make up for it.

      Hah. No.

Seriously, Sega's 3D platforming development skills slowly went downhill with the release of Billy Hatcher. Sure, they redeemed themselves slightly with Shadow, but not enough to keep them above water. And let's not ever get near next gen, shall we?

Seriously, I've given up on most Sega 3D platformers.

Of course, that doesn't mean I wont get it, being the sucker I am.

        Uh, Shadow sucked.

I returned it within a week of buying it. Too many cheap deaths, wtf is up with the guns, boring levels, impossible objectives (Besides the neutral ones.), most of the final bosses are the same.
        Note to self Finish.

Really looking forward to it. I'll follow Sonic to the grave. The game is apparently going to be quite fast paced (at last), I read it was a little slow starting but it really picks up. Looking forward to these "Ring Combinations" I've read about. If you haven't heard. The ring combinations are abilities you can give to Sonic, abilities like stopping in mid jump, homing attacks and starting off faster and stuff. sounds like fun to me.

If it's anything like Sonic Adventure 2, it's worth my time.

Everything after that was not even worth looking into.

I'll have to see a lot of gameplay videos and some really good reviews before I consider it, though. Their track record thus far is not good.

I don't know if I'm even half interested in it due to the method of control.

If I recall, it's almost like the wiimote is a steering wheel and you're driving Sonic. I'd rather have typical movement control in a game like this.

Sonic games are starting to become a bit faster-pace. Sonic the hedgehog (2006) was a really fast-paced game (except for Silver and the crappy city stuff you have to do). This game should seem fun.

Re: Sonic and the Secret Rings

For all those who say that the Sonic games have been progressively getting worse, this one is supposed to change that. It's focusing more on speed and Sonic himself and less on storyline and characters. It looks to be an actual 3D game representative of the gameplay of the original 2D games.

Whether or not the party mode is good or not, that I'm not so sure of as of yet.

Other area of discussion: Does the Arabian Nights theme work for the game or not?

i can only hope so, i dont play a sonic game for story, or to go fishing (that was horrible)i could care less if they give the sonic character AIDs, if the game involves him moving extremely fast, then i'll get it. btw do they even have the Spin Dash anymore? i miss that

Re: Sonic and the Secret Rings

Bump because I have the game.

Firstly the game is quite slow starting, You have to go through a few tutorials to know the controls. Then when you get going Sonic is just slow. The controls are quite sluggish as well. However, I found that these are part of a huge learning curve you don't realise your playing until you get about an hour into the game.

The controls are quite weird at first. Although billy no skill above me must not of realised you press 1 to brake the tilt the controller back a little and you walk backwards. They do seem quite sensitive at first but after observing a friend play the game I noticed that the controls do exactly what there told to do, it's just you don't realise how your holding the controller as you are absorbed in the gameplay and speed. For example you subconsciously hold the Wiimote at a slight tilt back, causing alittle confusion, although I'd much rather them to allow lazy hands but there not, you get used to it though.

Graphically the game is nice, there are no cutscenes as of yet, I'm about a 3rd into the game. Although the artwork is nice, I kinda prefer this as Sonic doesn't seem like a really bad actor, with his terrible body language and timing. His voice acting seems not to cheesy for some reason in this style. The yarn is span through pictures in a sort of comic format, kinda like Red Steel, XIII and such. I think it's quite effective as if goes hand in hand with arabian nights style story as the pictures are printed in a dusty old book. In game the graphics are lovely, not to shabby at all, there is some room for improvement but that goes without saying.

Gameplay wise, It's pretty much what you expect, running, jumping, some form of surfing/boarding/grinding from A to B. Like the other resent Sonic games though there is more to it. For example there are over 100 mission but as you guessed they are "Collect 100 ring" and "Finish within the time limit". There are a few new ones like "Destroy all enemies" and "Don't get defeated", Each world (level) has about 15 missions like this to unlock (and they're not always easy to) including a Boss mission where you fight the boss. Sorta levels in a world just like Monkey ball, you know, 7 levels and a boss level.

Something new to the game which I really like is the ring customisation and level system. You can level and gain SP. As you level you gain abilities and SP. These abilities add things to Sonic like mobility in the air and better handling on the ground, Boost start and start off with ring. There are loads, all of them very helpful. SP are Special Points. Each ability is worth so many special points. You have four rings. You place your abilities in these rings, so you can customise and choose what kind of Sonic you want to use for certain levels. However, each ring can only hold so many special points and so, only so many abilities. You have to choose you abilities wisely, as you level you can hold more in each ring though.

Now this is what Im talking about, once you get so many abilities and Sonic is fast and very agile (Which takes about as long as the learning curve is) your blitzing through levels. By now you should have the wildfire mode which means you collect orbs in game and use them to boost as break neck speed through levels. Now the game is starting to seem a lot more fun, missions don't seem to be dull anymore, there's finally a fast sonic game. I'm only a third through the game and I can tell you flying through levels is so much fun.

Music wise the game is cool, not the best I've heard but some really catchy tunes.

Multiplayer wise is ok, it's like a mini Mario Party. You play mini games which involve different motions with the Wiimote to win, thus granting you coins. These coins win you the multiplayer session. Quite fun, although some mini games are really tricky.

                        Overall I give the game a 7/10

I can see the game being quite short but with loads of replay value, they could of made the learning curve loads shorter as it's quite obvious some gamers with short attention spans won't stick with it. The music could be better, story wise the game is all right and gameplay wise there are a few little bugs. On the whole though a great experience, even if the games a late bloomer.
Update: The game does have cut scenes, you unlock them. There is this part of the game where you can view certian things like art, music and movies to watch. It's very cool.

I love this game now, I was in two minds about it. Now I have the Speed break and time distort. OMFG, The speed you go is insane. SO fast. Some of the levels are so visually stunning, the feeling of flying at break neck speeds through some of the levels is so satisfying. You need to get so far into the game before the chore is over and you can start having fun, but the chore phase is worth what you get out of it.

Your just so NNEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWNNNN. Just the way Sonic should be. I always imagined him blitzing through the beautiful Sonic word, I always wanted to know how that felt when I was little. This is the closest you'll get to it so far.

My friend got it on release day XD

I watched him play the Single Player mode, and I think it looks interesting, although I'm not sure I like the whole 'Arabian Knights' thing. My friend seemed to have trouble jumping, though (by lunging the controller forward). How are the controlls?

I did play multiplayer, however, and it was very enjoyable =^.^=, though I wish he had had Cream unlocked at the time >_>

Press 2 button to jump and thrust the wiimote forward to sort of mid air dash. You also do that to home in on badguys when you have a lock. I've never had trouble with it. It's really very easy/basic stuff.

I'm like level 29 or something now. I have a ring just for speed. It's awesome, (Oh and just before I tell you, when you want to jump you press the 2 button for a quick jump and hold it to charge a more powerful one. When you hold down the 2 button Sonic powerslides, which gradually stops you.) so, I unlocked this thing for slide. Instead of slowing right down when preparing for a jump you glide more, makes things so much more fluent on a speed run, it also looks awesome.

I finally got the game last week, and I'm glad I did. Although there are some problems, it is still a worthwhile game. I think I'm level 33, and I'm at the final world. Some moments in the game are extremely frustrating, but since you don't have a stock of lives you just continue playing from a certain point. Often times if I miss a fire soul and I'm not playing for time, I'll just die so I can go back to a previous spot and try to get it. And because the game is so fast, replaying a level to get a good time on it never feels that annoying.

The multiplayer is quite entertaining, although its no Mario Party. The games may not be that impressive, but the controls are pretty intuitive on most of the games. Also, the titles of the mini-games are just hilarious. "Aye aye Captain! Pirate Flag"? "Stay Tight! Big Balloon"? xD It was worth the $50 just to read those corny lines.

Yeah, I don't know how much I like the Arabian Nights theme, and the cut-scenes are kinda corny, but the gameplay is amazing.
