Newbie... gap and dwi file questions

Hey, I pretty much just decided I wanted to try and make some step files. I picked a song and followed the FAQ file for creating a step file, but there were some things that I didn't understand.

First of all, I don't really understand what the gap is. All that was said is that ic controlled the sync of the arrows for each song (I don't really understand what that means), and that beginners should set it at 0. I have no problem setting it at 0 for the time being, although it must be somewhat important if it is in the file, and I would like to know what to set it at if I want to make more step files.

Another thing, I tried creating a step file. I compared it to both the FAQ file and another step file that I downloaded with the recommended program: Dancing With Intensity. I have checked all of my semi-colons and everything, but the file does not want to play. I just stuck in another step file for the song (obviously the BPM and everthing else was wrong), and it worked. For the steps, I just stuck in some measures of 60606060 40404040 just to try to get it to work, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Yes, the file is .dwi, and no it is not .dwi.txt. Does anybody have any suggestions? I could paste the file here if necessary.

    Thanks

gap controls where and when the song starts.

you need a gap....when you have it and the proper BPM, you can make a stepfile very fast.

it goes in milliseconds....so if you have something like audacity, zoom in and try and find the place where the first beat is. then just like click on that spot and the gap will show on the bottom. like if where you clicked was 1.486746 secs into the song...gap= 1486

that way your stepfile will start on the first beat of the song, and you can make a good dwi.

and get stepmania if you wanna make stepfiles. www.stepmania.com

its super easy. just put a song in a folder, make new text and name it .dwi and it will set up everything for you when you.

then just insert the bpm and gap, and use the editor in the game to make the stepfile.

You're talking like you're using notepad...not a good idea for someone new.

I can do gap fine, but what about bpm? I put in a song that completly confused BPM studio. It went 91, to 149, to 122, to 109 and the song wasn't even changing speed. I use win BPM... but it's really only accurate to a whole number, the decimals are just to dependant on human error. Anyone have a free, GOOD, BPM finder?

            no.

            the machines make the errors

the decimals arn't error.....if you're tapping properly just keep going till the bpm doesn't change.

            or

            just bob your head.

or you can take your index fingers

now tap them back and forth...each finger taps once per beat....so your getting 2 taps per beat(8ths)...you'll know when you're on beat...you can hear it...now just remove 1 hand from the tapping...the other hand is the bpm....so just have like winbpm open and keep taping the beat for awhile.

ANYTHING WILL WORK JUST DO IT :O feel the beat......BECOME ONE WITH TEH SONG OLKOLO.

and keep going till you get a steady bpm where it doesn't change.

            done.

if you can't do it u r teh sux lol....but I usually check twice just to make sure.

WinBPM averages the BPM's of each tap, which is why it's all over the place when you start off and then the decimal stops changing after a while. So make sure you go for like at least a minute with WinBPM before you stop tapping.

I have a gap question, do you start the gap as when the song actually has the beat or starts or when its good to make steps for it?

Just start on the first beat....unless you want the first arrow to be somewhere else, then just get the gap for that location. It doesn't matter really....

                      No.

If your gap starts at the beginning of the song, and you bpm is correct....then you're 4ths and 8ths should stay onbeat the whole song.

If you often have problems with it going offbeat because the bpm changes a little bit during the song ect or the exact bpm is very hard to find, you can usually fix it using a few stops.

I'm saying that I make the errors and it effects the overal average, even if I do tap it for 2+ minutes. Getting off by just .1 can screw the whole stepfile. Maybe if you have like... insane rhythem, but when I do it it goes anywhere from (Saying the true bpm is 122.75) 139.0, 91.4, 122.3, 130.5, etc. It evens out eventaully, but it's stil not exact, and it needs to be pretty much exact to get a perfect stepfile set-up...

                            Most songs bpms= whole numbers

                            some are a .5

If you get something else you're probably wrong.

VERYYYYY FEW SONGS have odd bpm's, or the bpm will change during the song.

Honestly the only real way you can fix that is like....stops. Or you can stepfile a different song lol.

So yea....if bpm is ON and its still going offbeat.....try a stop. If still....check your gap/change it.

Alright, I finally got my first stepfile done ^_^ It is the opening song from Squaresoft game Chrono Cross.

What should I do with it now? Should I give it to somebody or something? I would like to see if anybody wants to look at it for suggestions since it is my first one.
