    What makes a band famous?

Today, I discovered a band. They're called Domain, and they make Power/Speed Metal. They've been around for 20 years, and yet, I've never heard of them. No one ever mentionned them, I've never seen any of their work reviewed or featured on any site (Except the LIMB website). Since I have started my own band, it got me wondering. What makes a band famous?

Originality: Then again, a lot of the very popular bands are rip-offs of older bands (Trivium), and only a few bands have a unique sound that are proper to them and is very hard to recreate (Blind Guardian, Dream Theater). A lot of people discover new bands because they sound very similar to the ones they're listening to.

Similarity versus diversity (between albums): Some bands, like Slayer and Dragonforce, have been known for releasing the same album over and over again, and yet have a huge success. Other bands have a great difference of sound between each album (Blind Guardian, again), yet are famous too.

Advertising: Since Internet has become very popular amognst the younger generation, it has been much easier to make publicity for a band. Myspaces, band websites and review/news websites have been a good way to get lots of visibility. Then again, what makes it that one band can get more fans than another?

All these questions are very interesting, and I'd like to get your opinions on them.

P.S. I used only Metal examples, but this applies to any genre.

I believe it has to be the music, but that is my view on things. The only reason why I know about some bands is because I listen to their music and I'm like, "hay, who did dis?" So I find out and I now know about them.

Of course that information will then be passed to my friends and my friends will tell me about their bands and I learn about their bands too.

I find that bands today are more concerned with looks other than what they put out on their albums.I listen to them if I like the music. For instance, any preppy girl will tell you that FallOut Boy is good. I think they are horrible. I like bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, and people will tell you they are bad, so i guess it depends on what is "popular" at the time the band is around.

People raving about a band, saying "This band is so good! Listen to them!!!"
        Kinda like what tsugomaru said.

Re: What makes a band famous?

If a band is good enough or bad enough that a lot of the people that hear the music tell others about it, it becomes famous. I know that's an oversimplified explanation.

Cool thread. I swear I just had my first band practice today lol. We were thinking of a name and I thought of Wost Case Scenario and everyone liked it. Later I googled Worst Case Scenario band and there was already an unsigned banned called that, so I thought well there unsigned so I can still keep that name. Then I read more and they play in my local scene. lol.

I think this is most important, but it must be coupled with the ability to actually appeal to the audience you're advertising to. Different audiences want different things and regardless of the objective quality of the music, it has to be subjectively right for your demographic, I guess is the way to put it.

I mean, Domain, for example, has a pretty small demographic. You say they're power/speed metal, but that's a minority of metal as a whole which is a minority of popular music as a whole. Secondly, they're German. This makes it more difficult to be popular amongst non-German audiences. (Even though ,as we all know, German speed metal is the best ). They'd need more marketing to do that. And finally, they have no gimmick, they're not young-hip-and-happenin' and they have no particular special appeal, no matter how good they may be. Though I haven't heard them.

If you look at Dragonforce, whom you mentioned, they had incredible word-of-mouth advertising during their demo days on the internet. And they also have special appeal to certain audiences. They are indeed young-hip-and-happenin', they have a certain good-natured charisma, and their actual sound stands out a bit which appeals to the people who crave an abundance of speed or melody. From this, they were able to really gain a ton of popularity.

You also mentioned Blind Guardian who I think owe a lot of their success to being part of a distinct scene early on with the German speed metal scene with Helloween and guys like that. Similar with Slayer's popularity in California.
