Heads or Tails?
The Machine that Won the War is a short story by Isaac Asimov about a machine that won a war. The machine is called multivac because it used to be a vacuum. I think it was one of those vacuums that is in the walls of the house and then you can plug a tube into the wall and it just sucks no matter where in the house you are. Anyways, it was a really cool vacuum, so cool that they decided to turn it into a super-freaking-amazing computer. This computer was how they won the war against the bad-guys. The computer was awesome and always made the right choices, but it turns out that everybody was just making the computer up and some guy was flipping a coin. Pretty lame ending if you ask me. In the book “war in the age of intelligent machines” by Manuel De Landa, Manny talks about how machines make all the decisions and soon machines will rule the world. I think this is a load of nonsense because everyone knows that all you have to do is unplug the machine for it to run out of power and die (well it’s not really dead but that’s not the point I guess). So I think manuel is paranoid and he needs a psychiatrist.
So heads or tails?
