Most people here would suggest all sorts of techno.

Me being one of them, I suggest checking out drum n bass. It's a great way to get into techno because it's easy to listen to and it isn't all that bad, honestly. If you're looking for some soft listening, look into London Elektricity, Cyantific... pretty much anything under the Hospital Records label. If you're looking for something darker, look for Dieselboy or Technical Itch (sometimes you'll need to look for him as Tech Itch).

You'll also need some good stuff to download music with. uTorrent is the best Bittorrent client out there, easily (go to Wikipedia and learn all about Bittorrent there). For anything that you can't find as a torrent, there's Soulseek. Limewire I don't recommend unless you want to sample the songs because everything is organized poorly.

Oh, and I'm sure a lot of people here listen to IDM and hardcore. That stuff isn't exactly great for people just getting into music, especially electronic music. Trust me on this--drum n bass.

Just as a warning and I stumbled across this by accedent stay FAR away from something called "Speedbass". It is the worst crap you will ever listen to. Though if your having a bad day it can sometimes make you laugh.

music is something that is pretty much as subjective as something can be...


in all honestly, you really should experiment with a free online radio, like spinner plus or something... something that will give you 100+ different genres all at the tip of your finger. that way you can experient and find what you like best.

If you have a myspace, you can easily get into popular music. Just go to the music directory and BAM! You get the top bands from any genre.

If you want to hear one of the greatest songs ever made, listen to Hird's "I Love You My Only Hope", Denki Groove's "Niji (Go=Ten Forward Mix)", or "Wicked Jumper."

Trance will make you stupid and ignorant. It will also cause you to want to preform oral sex on your favorite DJ...in a straight, european kind of way.

Jazz/Bebop will make you drink coffee, smoke marijuana and read Jack Kerouac.

Smooth Jazz will make you Asexual.

Anime soundtracks, like metal, will make you social ienpt. However to a greater degree (social inept even amongst the social inept). You will also have the desire to learn Japanese and eat Japanese food...but not authetic Japanese food, just california rolls and instant ramen. Evetually you will be brainwashed into thinking Japanese people and their culture are superior in everyway. You will be compelled to save all your money and buy a one-way ticket to Japan. The first few weeks wondering around Tokyo will be pure esctasy until you run out of money and collapse from starvation onto a pile of assorted Japanese toys, and empty ramune bottles. You will die alone, clutching the 5000円 katana you purchased from some street cart in Kyoto.

Classic Rock will make you moderately retarded and (see Metal).

IDM/Experimental will brainwash you into thinking clicks, whistles and other random noises are actually considered music.

Folk will make you want to smoke marijuana and ingest LSD. You will lose your job because jeans and hemp sandals do not meet dresscode. Your risk of dying by choking on your own vomit doubles.

Classical/Baroque/Chamber Music will make think you are smarter than you really are.

Indie, Baroque/Chamber Pop will make you actually take Pitchfork media seriously.

Hip-Hop will make white people fear you. You will also take up an interest in "tagging" and you will try to start up your own clothing company.

Corporate rap/hip-hop will make you a fucking retard and you should be killed. Your risk of becoming infected with full-blown AIDs also triples.

Funk will make you black.

Trip-Hop (see IDM/Experimental)

College Rock will make you wear sandals all the time and play frisbee/hacky sack in the quad.
