If you've read the book by Gregory Maguire, you're not going to recognize much of the plot of the musical--but it's just as good if not better, especially with Julia Murney as Elphaba. Goddamn that woman has a GREAT voice.
Tass and I saw this tonight in Philadelphia--the 2nd understudy for Glinda was on tonight, Emily Rozek, but she was also awesome. (And for some reason really really familiar to me; I can't put my finger on it. Maybe just because she was like a mishmash of EVERY SINGLE VALLEY GIRL/Barbie doll brought to life I have EVER SEEN.)
The music was good if a little sentimental and wishy-washy, the voices were absolutely astounding. And the plot, which like I said has almost nothing to do with the book, made me happy because it both made sense and gave a great ending. Also, Dorothy is NOT in it at all. YAY.
I bought an "I (heart) Oz" shirt and a stuffed green monkey--I really wanted a "Shiz University" t-shirt but they weren't for sale. I'll find one online maybe.
Seriously good show. Go see it if it's in your area.
Endnote because if I don't, Tass will: I wore a pair of high-heeled sandals tonight to look pretty. I don't wear heels often. This would not have been a problem if the straps of the sandals had not cut off all circulation to my pinkie toe on each foot, and caused them to be VERY VERY PAINFUL and BLEED. I was barefoot during most of the show, and the walk back to the train station to get home was AWFUL. I'm sure Tass will comment anyway on how annoying and whiney I was, but I was in SEVERE PAIN DAMMIT.
