Never Say Forever: The Journey to the Bridge

Jamie woke up looking directly into Stephen’s face. He was snoring lightly. She smiled and sat up in the bed. The sun was shining but the air outside had a permeating feel to it. The air seemed thick like smoke and the color reflected it. She turned to Stephen and shook him lightly.

“Whuzzat?” asked Stephen as he woke up groggily.

“We need to get ready to leave. I have a bad feeling about today.”

Stephen and Jamie both searched around the bedroom for any clothes that would hide them from detection. Stephen ended up wearing long black jogging pants with a long black shirt, some sunglasses, and a blue cap. Jamie ended up wearing a pair of slacks with a tan women’s business suit, some sunglasses, and a very colorful hat as well. Stephen snickered.

“What’s so funny? You look like some rapper from the 90’s!” said Jamie.

Stephen and Jamie then both started to look around the apartment for any type of weapon they could carry with them. However, there were none to be found.

“I’ll check the closet in the bedroom,” said Jamie as Stephen searched around the living room.

Jamie walked into the Master bedroom and looked into the closet. Once again, there were more clothes hanging up. Jamie peered to the top and saw a bunch of boxes. She pulled them down onto the ground and sat down cross-legged. She began to open the boxes only finding pairs of shoes and more hats.

“Stephen, there’s nothing in these...” she began.

She had just opened a box labeled, “Chanterelle Shoes” to find not shoes made by Chanterelle, but two automatic Desert Eagle pistols. Beside the guns were two boxes of bullets; one for each gun.

‘Stephen!’ cried Jamie. “Get in here!”

Stephen came running in to see the guns and almost fainted.

“Oh my God. This is perfect!” said Stephen joyfully.

Jamie, having her father be a hunter, loaded up both Desert Eagles, and made sure each of the guns were on safety. If it ever came to shooting someone, Jamie would have no problem. Killing a monster is just like killing an animal. However, Stephen might not have that sort of experience.

    “Stephen...” began Jamie.

“Don’t worry Jamie. We had training in the facility. I know how to handle pistols, rifles, machine guns, you name it.”

    Jamie face lit up.

“Do you know where we can get those weapons?” asked Jamie hopefully.

“Yeah, if you don’t mind going into Cyclen’s Ammunition Sector and risk getting shot,” answered Stephen with a grimace.

    “Good point,” said Jamie.

Jamie handed Stephen the gun who tucked the gun into his jogging pants. Jamie had put the gun in a pocket that was sewed into the inside of the jacket. They were ready to leave.

“Ok, we’re going to leaver from here and go east towards North Haven. If we can cut across the Wichita Bridge without being noticed we can get into downtown West Hamlin without much hassle,” said Jamie as she pulled out a map she found in the kitchen and put it on the bed.

“No, that might not be so easy,” started Stephen.

He pointed towards the Wichita Bridge.

“If Cyclen is smart, they’ll have blocked off every major route inside of the Six Points: New Crest, South Haven, North Haven, West Hamlin, and Center City. The Cyclen Facility is in New Crest but the main HQ is in Center City. West Hamlin is too close to Center City and will be the second most guarded Point after Center. I suggest we come up through North Haven, but instead of going on the bridge...”

“You think we should go over it, don’t you?” finished Jamie, with an eyebrow arched. Stephen started to smile.

“You’re not afraid of heights are you?”

A lump started to form in Jamie’s throat.

"Of course not, I just think it’s a dumb idea is all.”

    Stephen stood up.

“Well, dumb or not, Cyclen will have the Breakers on the ground and not in the air. Let’s go,” said Stephen as he opened up the bedroom window.

Stephen and Jamie made their way through the fir escape and started to walk away from the building. Jamie was right. The air did feel thicker. The streets felt abandoned as only a few people were seen every now and then. Jamie and Stephen walked by a bank to see the time flashing on the marquee. It read 8:57 AM.

“For so early in the morning, I thought more people would be up,” said Jamie.

“If you’re smart you would stay off the streets during martial law,” said Stephen.

Luckily, Stephen and Jamie had no trouble crossing over into North Haven and walking down the streets. Of course that didn’t stop them from taking the back ways of the Point. They saw more and more people on the streets going along with life as if martial law had no effect on them as they approached the Wichita Bridge.

“Seeing people make me feel a little better,” said Jamie slightly smiling.

“Well don’t get to comfortable, we’re here,” said Stephen with a stern look on his face.

Jamie looked ahead to see a row of cars lining up in front of them. Up ahead was a large bridge that rivaled the Golden Gate in size. In front of the bridge was a large roadblock set up. There were men in black camouflage Kevlar vests with green and tan camouflage suits. They were large black helmets and carried fearsome MP5 automatic machine guns on their shoulders.

“Ok, this is where we need to get off the street,” said Jamie as Stephen and her ducked towards an alley.

They followed the alley until it came to a stone support for the bridge and a rusty red door in front of them. On the left side of the door was a rusty service ladder that led up into the service walkway on the top of the bridge. Stephen quickly dashed to the ladder and Jamie did the same. They continued to climb up to the top, always looking down at the roadblock for trouble. Or course none came and they continued to the top.

Stephen helped Jamie up and they both stared over the bridge to the other side. They could see the beginning skyscrapers of West Hamlin and saw cars crossing the bridge.

    “Ready?” asked Stephen.

    Jamie nodded, slightly looking green.

    “Let’s go!"

Stephen and Jamie both took off running over the bridge. They both held the sides as they ran down the suspension cable and back up it. Jamie tried her best to not look down as she ran behind Stephen. They reached the middle and came to a small stone room. Jamie and Stephen both stopped to adjust their guns and catch some rest. They were about to start running again when a small bit of plaster chipped off of a wall. Jamie knew that sound. It was trouble.

“DUCK DOWN!” yelled Jamie as a bullet whizzed by Stephen’s head.

Jamie looked behind them to see about four of the Black soldiers running across the bridge, brandishing pistols.

    PING! PING!

More bullets whizzed by the teens’ heads. Jamie pulled out her pistols, took off the safety, and aimed carefully. The sound of the barrel shook the room as Jamie got off four shots. Every shot hit a soldier in the heart and they clutched their bodies and fell over towards the river.

“Come on, let’s go!” said Jamie as she carried Stephen up and continued to run on the bridge.

More pings were heard as more men began to climb the bridge. Jamie and Stephen were halfway across the second suspension cable when they suddenly stopped. Three soldiers had climbed the other side and were trapping them in. Stephen took off his safety and shot the first two climbing up in the head. But there were three more soldiers after the ones he had just killed. Now, they were truly trapped.

“What do we do now?” asked Stephen nervously.

Jamie looked down towards the water. It didn’t look deep.

“Can you swim?” asked Jamie as she grabbed Stephen.

“WHAT?” yelled Stephen as he turned to see a soldier holding a rocket propelled grenade launcher.

“LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPONS AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON THE RAILS NOW OR WE WILL BE FORCED TO EXERCISE FORCE!” said one of the soldiers on the West Hamlin side of the bridge.

“JUMP!” yelled Jamie as she and Stephen jumped off of the bridge right as the rocket was launched.

The rocket missed the two and exploded into the stone room on the bridge. The shrapnel severed one of the cables causing a chain reaction. The West Hamlin side of the bridge began to buckle and cars began to drive into the Wichita River. The two teens emerged from the water on a bank on West Hamlin as the Wichita Bridge fell into the river.

“God in heaven…” said Jamie as her eyes widened.

“Come on Jamie. We need to find 7th Street fast,” said Stephen.

Jamie and Stephen both climbed up the bank and dodged into an alleyway hearing the sirens of the police wail in the distance.

Once again, you manage to troll Literature and post your inane, and utterly pathetic, non-helping comments. Ignored, once again.
