And i'm gonna take this class that my school offers, called Instrument Ensemble-Guitar (Intro)....which is basically beginning guitar class. It requires a classical guitar which i like the idea of. But I can't afford to buy like a brand new guitar or anything, especially after buying my violin that i've had for about 6 years now. So i'm relying on a pawn shop to provide me with this guitar. What should I look for, so that i know i'm getting a good deal? Is there certain things in the guitar i should look for, such as damage signs or signs of failure when i play for like a week and it just falls apart? And this guy at school is selling his old one, but i don't know how to "inspect" it to ensure that it's not a cheap-o that he's trying to get rid of hoping some idiot would buy it just to play it and it falls apart on the spot. All help is appreciated, thanks. Oh, and if you can help me play that'd be badass too =]

Re: So i want to play guitar...
Yes look for damage and inspect any guitar you may want to get, sence your buying from a pawn shop, but I would say go to a local music and arts or Mars Music store to buy it, I got my first one from Mars and it was $150.00 bucks.
Also I would go with a fairly good steel string(marton strings), there louder, but if you want to get a nylon string guitar thats good too, they are easyer to play.
Learning how to play in school classes is how I learned the basics, sheet music and reading notes. I had two years of it, and I had the best teacher ever who tought that class too, hes like my friend now.

Re: So i want to play guitar...
Ok. It depends. If you want an acoustic or an electric. I reccomend acoustic for classical guitar. If you have ever head the Ozzy Osbourne Song,
"Dee" on the tribute album, you'll know why. Beginning guitar can be very dry at first, but it will all pay off in the end. Learning the fretboard like it is your own penis will be helpful. Classical guitar has many odd notes that make it sound weird. I think it would be mostly minor seeming how minor sounds "classical" to me. Otherwise, inspect the guitar.
Guide to Inspecting:
1. Look for any chips, breaks, or cracks.
Breaks, chips, and cracks can effect the guitars sound quality if its acoustic.
2. Check all hardware.
Check the bridge, nut, fretboard, or other metal things on the guitar to see if
they are loose or broken. If the bridge falls off your screwed.
3. Check strings.
Not a biggie but nice shiny strings are always a good thing. I reccomend buying new strings when you do get it.
4. Make sure it is left/right handed to your needs.
If you are left handed, as I am, you will go through some difficult times. Until I realized that I could take the nut out and put it back in backwards, I played upside down. Horrible for me. I basically learned all over again. If you're right handed, easy sailing. Most guitars are right handed.
5. Check sound.
If the strings aren't in tune it's quite obvious. Just make sure you aren't getting a raspy, or even dirty sound. You want a clean and ringing sound.
Thats about all. I think I'll grab my guitar to see if I missed anything. Hope this helps.

Re: So i want to play guitar...
Well, since i've been playing the violin for about 6 years as i mentioned, reading music and the basics of instruments come easy for me. Since the guitar is a close relative of the violin, the only hard part for me would have to be memorizing finger placement for more than one string at a time, obviously, and playing with an extra 2 strings. Other than that, reading music and tuning and all that other stuff is natural to me. But thanks though, i'll keep those in mind. I'm not sure when i'll actually get this guitar, but when i do, i'll be sure to take pictures of it after i "inspect" it for you guys to see the results. I went to mars music yesterday and the cheapest classical acoustic they had was 175, and my parents don't agree to me buying a $175 guitar when i can buy a pawn shop one for $50~70. Same with me jones, the teacher here is like the best teacher in all the arts/music departments in the district, so i look forward to the class with him.

Re: So i want to play guitar...
When I said best teacher ever, I literaly ment it, he was the coolest teacher I have ever had cause we would awalys talk about stuff before, durning and after playing. Also he let us play ddr on free days in the classroom, and we played dodge ball a few times, that was fun, lol.
So yah man I hope your teacher is as cool as mine was. =)
