If you happen to enjoy this genre, here are a list of excellent authors:
Lee Child - Jack Reacher is the man. Up there with other kick-ass Jacks... Jack Bauer and Jack Bristow.
Dennis Lehane (the Patrick Kenzie novels, pre-Mystic River) - Kenzie is a PI with a sense of humor. Excellently written.
Jan Burke - Irene Kelly is a reporter who just can't stop getting into trouble. Luckily for her, husband Frank Harriman is a Homicide detective.
Greg Iles - Nanchez, Miss is a rough town to grow up in... plenty of things go wrong there. (Only about 50% of his novels are set there. The rest are just as good, if not better).
Stephen Hunter - Earl Swagger is a southern 50s man who gets mixed up fighting against gangsters, cuban lords, or the wrong side of the law. His son Bob Lee is a sharp-shooting ace with a long history in Vietnam and a knack for people trying to frame him.
James Swain - Tony Valentine used to work as an AC cop. Now that he's retired, he does freelance work for casinos around the world.
Robert Crais - Elvis Cole is another PI with a sense of humor. The only author who I haven't read every single book he(she) has written. Excellent mystery and lots of ass-kicking.
Anyone else have suggestions for excellent authors in this genre?
As starters, I'd recommend Killing Floor by Lee Child, Bones by Jan Burke, 24 Hours by Greg Iles, Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter.
The movie Hostage is based on the Robert Crais book... in case anyone has seen it.
