These are my opinions of the most overrated and underrated films. I feel that there are way more underrated movies though.
Overrated (not in any specific order):
1. Bad Santa - Funny as hell but not NEARLY up to the title of Best Christmas movie that I hear so many people give it.
2. Napoleon Dynamite - Innovative and hilarious but was made into way too big of a deal.
3. A Knight's Tale - It's cool but Heath Ledger isn't anything special contrary to popular belief.
4. The Ring - It just wasn't that scary and was pretty boring but didn't stop people from hoppin' the bandwagon and saying they loved it.
5. Anchorman - Again another movie that was trendy to watch. Will Ferrell is hilarious I know and so is Steve Carell but it wasn't funny enough to deserve all the acclaim. 40 Year Old Virgin on the other hand definitely deserved all the acclaim.
6. Eurotrip - Everyone in my school kept singing "Scotty Doesn't Know" to every Scott in my class for 3 months. It isn't that funny. Only cool part of the movie was the robot battle. That was sweet.
Short list I know but the gist of it is that most movies receive an "overrated" rating because people hop on the bandwagon and make a big deal out of it. ACTUAL excerpt from convo my little sis had with her friend...
Sis: Anchorman is so funny...I love Will Ferrell
Friend: I haven't seen it...I need to rent it because you're like the 18th person who's told me about it.
Sis: Yea you need to see it because that's all anyone's talkin' about at school.

ONWARD TO UNDERRATED MOVIES!!!!
Underrated films (in no special order):
1. The Butterfly Effect - This movie was so cool. It had an amazing score and storyline. Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart were GOOD actors in this movie. You could take Ashton seriously. It was so amazing and people only don't like this movie because they think Ashton was a bad cast. The movie also kept you interested and intrigued the WHOLE time.
DISCLAIMER: Above statement refers only to Director's Cut version because original theatrical ending sucked compared to Director's Cut ending.
2. Constantine - This movie was awesome. People are hung up on Keanu Reeve's acting style but people fail to realize that he's the perfect cast for a role like this and like Neo. It's a role that doesn't require much emotion...it's better if there's less emotion and Keanu pulls it off perfectly. This movie had awesome special effects and a super cool plot. I love this movie.
3. The entire collection of Ernest movies - Ernest rocks and that's fact. Shut up.
4. Evolution - This is a fun, entertaining movie with an enjoyable cast and funny lines. David Duchovny especially since he's already associated with The X-Files (best series of all time). Cool special effects and sweet plot round this out. I never understood why people didn't like this movie.
5. The Girl Next Door - THIS MOVIE IS NOT PORN...it's got a super good plot with a feel good ending and funny characters. Elisha Cuthbert in a thong and sideboob shot is a very welcome bonus.
6. Hook - This movie is regarded by many critics as a smudge on Spielberg's list of works. This movie is so fantastic it's ridiculous. Performances are cool (minus Julia Roberts who I've always hated) and the score is so fantastic. It's the story of Peter Pan for crying out loud and it's the best adaptation of it. This is my favorite Spielberg movie.
7. Legally Blonde - As a male...this movie was good. It ain't no pink and dollies and horsies movie. This is a movie about law and overcoming adversity. I especially like it because it has the theme of overcoming stupid snobby brats which I hate.
8. The New Guy - This movie is good because it chronicles the story of the picked on kid in school. Every person in the world who went to school was picked on at some point. This picked on kid becomes cool and he rights wrongs all over the school. How could you not see the beauty of this movie? It's also funny and has Eliza Dushku.
9. Private Parts - This movie is like a biography of the life of Howard Stern. Most people are like "Howard Stern...what a jerk." If people would actually watch this movie they'd realize that Howard is a hard-working, ambitious person who isn't afraid to get what he wants and is totally honorable. He has millions and millions of listeners because he talks about stuff that people wanna hear. I hate censorship. Support by the Howard Stern regulars and Paul Giamatti round out this awesome movie.
Thus concludes my list of underrated and overrated movies. I look forward to your comments if you have any.
