My list of the most overrated/underrated films of all time

These are my opinions of the most overrated and underrated films. I feel that there are way more underrated movies though.

Overrated (not in any specific order):

    1. Bad Santa - Funny as hell but not NEARLY up to the title of Best Christmas movie that I hear so many people give it.

    2. Napoleon Dynamite - Innovative and hilarious but was made into way too big of a deal.

    3. A Knight's Tale - It's cool but Heath Ledger isn't anything special contrary to popular belief.

    4. The Ring - It just wasn't that scary and was pretty boring but didn't stop people from hoppin' the bandwagon and saying they loved it.

    5. Anchorman - Again another movie that was trendy to watch. Will Ferrell is hilarious I know and so is Steve Carell but it wasn't funny enough to deserve all the acclaim. 40 Year Old Virgin on the other hand definitely deserved all the acclaim.

    6. Eurotrip - Everyone in my school kept singing "Scotty Doesn't Know" to every Scott in my class for 3 months. It isn't that funny. Only cool part of the movie was the robot battle. That was sweet.

Short list I know but the gist of it is that most movies receive an "overrated" rating because people hop on the bandwagon and make a big deal out of it. ACTUAL excerpt from convo my little sis had with her friend...

Sis: Anchorman is so funny...I love Will Ferrell
Friend: I haven't seen it...I need to rent it because you're like the 18th person who's told me about it.
Sis: Yea you need to see it because that's all anyone's talkin' about at school.

    ONWARD TO UNDERRATED MOVIES!!!!

Underrated films (in no special order):

    1. The Butterfly Effect - This movie was so cool. It had an amazing score and storyline. Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart were GOOD actors in this movie. You could take Ashton seriously. It was so amazing and people only don't like this movie because they think Ashton was a bad cast. The movie also kept you interested and intrigued the WHOLE time.

DISCLAIMER: Above statement refers only to Director's Cut version because original theatrical ending sucked compared to Director's Cut ending.

    2. Constantine - This movie was awesome. People are hung up on Keanu Reeve's acting style but people fail to realize that he's the perfect cast for a role like this and like Neo. It's a role that doesn't require much emotion...it's better if there's less emotion and Keanu pulls it off perfectly. This movie had awesome special effects and a super cool plot. I love this movie.

    3. The entire collection of Ernest movies - Ernest rocks and that's fact. Shut up.

    4. Evolution - This is a fun, entertaining movie with an enjoyable cast and funny lines. David Duchovny especially since he's already associated with The X-Files (best series of all time). Cool special effects and sweet plot round this out. I never understood why people didn't like this movie.

    5. The Girl Next Door - THIS MOVIE IS NOT PORN...it's got a super good plot with a feel good ending and funny characters. Elisha Cuthbert in a thong and sideboob shot is a very welcome bonus.

    6. Hook - This movie is regarded by many critics as a smudge on Spielberg's list of works. This movie is so fantastic it's ridiculous. Performances are cool (minus Julia Roberts who I've always hated) and the score is so fantastic. It's the story of Peter Pan for crying out loud and it's the best adaptation of it. This is my favorite Spielberg movie.

    7. Legally Blonde - As a male...this movie was good. It ain't no pink and dollies and horsies movie. This is a movie about law and overcoming adversity. I especially like it because it has the theme of overcoming stupid snobby brats which I hate.

    8. The New Guy - This movie is good because it chronicles the story of the picked on kid in school. Every person in the world who went to school was picked on at some point. This picked on kid becomes cool and he rights wrongs all over the school. How could you not see the beauty of this movie? It's also funny and has Eliza Dushku.

    9. Private Parts - This movie is like a biography of the life of Howard Stern. Most people are like "Howard Stern...what a jerk." If people would actually watch this movie they'd realize that Howard is a hard-working, ambitious person who isn't afraid to get what he wants and is totally honorable. He has millions and millions of listeners because he talks about stuff that people wanna hear. I hate censorship. Support by the Howard Stern regulars and Paul Giamatti round out this awesome movie.

Thus concludes my list of underrated and overrated movies. I look forward to your comments if you have any.
At least I'm not Mike Lean.

I agree with you for the most part. I would have added kung Fu hustle to the underrated list and taken out Legally Blonde.

Constantine: The movie was a pretty loose adaptation of the comic, but it was good.
The New Guy: A funny movie, but nothing special about it.
Evolution: Hilarious. Orlando is the man.

I'd say Better Luck Tomorrow is underrated

RE: My list of the most overrated/underrated films of all ti

Of the movies on your list... I've seen (and will comment on):

Bad Santa - Extremely funny, but definately NOT best Christmas comedy ever. Best Christmas comedies = A Christmas Story (you'll shoot your eye out!) and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Bar none.

Knight's Tale - decent flight, for a chick flick. Fight scenes are enjoyable, but god damn is Heath Ledger annoying.

Eurotrip - Excellent movie of the "sick college humor" genre, including films like American Pie, Road Trip, Old School, Super Troopers, Harold & Kumar, etc etc... not the best of the group, not the worst. But I love EVERY movie of this genre, and have every movie I've listed on DVD (Then again, I also have Bloodsport 2, Dragonheart, and Dungeons & Dragons on DVD...)

Constantine - I downloaded this, so the quality wasn't very good and it was dark. I'm not a huge fan of recent Keanu Reeves movies (as opposed to older ones like Bill & Ted). Also not a huge fan of religious based movies... but with all of that combined, it was ok. Not great, not terrible... it was ok.

Ernst - I've seen every one of these... and they are so retard that they are funny. Not good by a long shot, but so stupid that they are funny.

Girl Next Door - Elisha Cuthburt is SO HOT (see Season 1 & 2 of 24). It was also a cute movie and I enjoyed how it ended. Definately worth seeing. Would have been 1000x better had Cuthburt showed a nipple or two.

Hook - A classic. Whorli and I just watched this on ABC Family the other day. A classic. Anyone who doesn't remember this movie from when they were a kid... y'all suck. Then again, I believe it came out in 1991, and some of you weren't even born yet. I saw this in the theater when I was 7. This was also the time period when Robin Williams did good movies. Combine in Dustin Hoffman as Hook... classic.

Private Parts - Not as good as the book, but is a pretty decent adaptation. Stern should do some more acting, IMO. Not that he needs the money. He said that if he retired from radio, he'd think about doing a little acting and/or writing... but seeing as how he isn't retiring... who knows. Worth seeing at least once if you're a fan of the Stern show or are curious how he came to be the King of All Media.

PS - You sir have no testicles.... legally blond? are you kidding me?

PPS - Underrated movie... Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. HILARIOUS! Even has Neil Patrick Harris.
            RIP

blah--I agree with Back to the Future. I have all three in a shiny box set. But because Tass has seen each one more times than he can count, he refuses to watch with me.

As for the rest...I'll only comment on the ones I've actually seen.

I liked Bad Santa. I thought it was very funny and very rude and pretty awesome. I also haven't seen any of the other Christmas movies listed here, so I can't compare.

I LOVED A Knight's Tale. Heath Ledger is hot as hell, and the music is amusingly appropriate. That woman...the princess/lady/whatever Shannyn Sossamon, she named her kid something retarded like Audio Science, so I lost all respect for her.

Loved Eurotrip but Tass is right, there's better ones in the genre. Admittedly, none with incest or Lucy Lawless as a dominatrix. Harold and Kumar should have been on the list, just for NPH.

Girl Next Door was funny but not as awesome as you guys say. I think you're blinded by Elisha Cuthbert, rather than the movie itself.

Hook was GREAT. I loved it as a kid, and I still love it. Plus, Bob Hoskins!

Legally Blonde was very very cute. Reese Witherspoon is such a versatile actress, I've loved almost everything she's been in. And a guy who can admit that it was good is not ball-less, but secure in his masculinity.

No, War of the Worlds just sucked.

I warn you, if you don't want this amazing movie spoiled for you, do not read the following font-size 1 summary:

Family problems. Aliens attack. Running, running, running, running, hiding, running, the decision to stop running, more running anyway, running, hiding, running, OH HAY THE ALIENS DIE WITH AIR. The end.

It was a disgrace to the original.

Anyway, Legally Blonde was a chick flick to the extreme, Eurotrip was better than The Girl Next Door, I agree that The New Guy was a great movie and should have gotten more attention, I agree that Napoleon Dynamite wasn't that special, and Anchorman was genius. Also, though Constantine was great, I must ask: How does not being emotional go with inevitable death? Keanu needs to retake Grade 6 Drama onward.

Definitely true. The ending sucked. But the sheer level of destruction witnessed was awesome.

I think Anchorman lived up to more hype than The 40 Year Old Virgin did.
