    RahXephon vs. Evangelion

*Warning! This is a serious Anime discussion. No fscking it up.*

They rhyme people, but are they similar? I had the chance to finish watching the entire series of RahXephon tonight. After the end of the regular series, I went back and rented the movie from Blockbuster. IMO the movie was a little better with the ending but I digress. However, after watching the series, especially during the final episode, something occured to me. RahXephon seemed strangely familiar and reminiscent of Evangelion. Hmm, let's explore this shall we?

    1. Main Characters - The main characters of both anime are whiny, insecure, emotionally distressed teens. Nuff said.

    2. Main Mecha of Anime - Of course I'm referring to the Mecha in both series. While Ayato Kamina (RahXephon) pilots the self-titled mecha, Shinji Ikari (Evangelion) pilots Eva Unit 01. Both mecha are closely involved with the main characters and are major assets to the end of the series which leads me to....

    3. Ending of Series - If you don't like spoilers, avert your eyes now. Both series end in a very dramatic way. Let's explore them.

Neon Genesis Evagelion - If you havent seen End of Evagelion, you are a n00b. But seriously, in the end, SEELE attacks NERV with thier production units of Eva that forces Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami to begin the Human Instrumentality Project, which generally means to end the entire world and turn everyone into LCL liquid, or the primordial soup of beginning time. The entire world ends and everyone dies.

RahXephon - If you want a happier ending, see the movie not the series. Anyway, Ayato, now comes to terms that he is indeed no longer human and is Mu and apart of the RahXephon. In a climatic ending, Ayato accepts this and "Tunes" the entire world with song that VERY SIMILARLY is exactly the same thing Evangelion does. In short, everyone on Earth dies. Coincidence?

After comparing and contrasting I've come to this conclusion. It is blatantly obvious that RahXephon wants to be another Evangelion clone, but it does it in its own style. It wouldn't be fair to give Eva the nod just because it's Eva. So IMO I think that Evangelion and RahXephon are similar in thier aspects but go about their own ways of doing it. So any opinons about the topic?

    RE: RahXephon vs. Evangelion

Simple enough; RahXephon copied the popular show in attempts to make a halfway decent show. The only thing they pulled off was a terrific intro by none other than Maaya Sakamoto which crushes Cruel Angel's Thesis.

Neither of them made any sense and I didn't like either. Coincidence?

Both series featured the same thing: complicated underlying themes that never get explained in any way, shape, or form, sudden endings; extremely boring action toward the end, and giant robots to tie it all together.

I'm suprised you didn't like Evangelion. Sure the series dragged on a little bit, but End of Evangelion is NGE's redeeming quality, as so as RahXephon's movie.

        RE: RahXephon vs. Evangelion

I thought both RahXephon and Evangelion were great series. They are similar in a lot of ways, but also vastly different. I havent seen RahXephon in two years, so I am not positive as to what exactly happens. What I do remember is the first 10 episodes of RahXephon are exactly like Evangelion and I almost stopped watching RahXephon because of that. But after that, the series really picks up and goes its own way.

I do however have to disagree with your synopsis of the endings though Chromer. SPOILERS

The Human Instrumentality Project was designed because Seele believed mankind was at an evolutionary dead end. Evangelion (the series) does end where Shinji accepts the Human Instrumentality project, which doesnt mean everyone is dead, but everyone's souls are concentrated into one being: "God." In End of Evangelion Shinji rejects (due to the fact that he cant feel where he ends and others begin. If you'd like, I can explain this more) the Human Instrumentality Project in the end hence the scene where Eva 01 busts out of Rei Ayanami's eye. Thus, God was not created and as Rei explained "those who have the will to live" will be able to return to their normal state or something to that effect. That is why Asuka shows up in the end.

Just so you know, I am extremely tired and out of it right now, so my explaination is probably very poor. If you'd like something cleared up, I will. I have spent way to much time reading into the mythology behind Evangelion..so I have a wealth over information on the subject.

RahXephon's ending was a duel between the Humans and the Mulians over who gets to Tune the world. The Humans won. The world was tuned in the favor of the humans. Thus killing off any remaining Mulians. However, in the Movie the ending shows a new continent in the pacific. For those of you who dont know Mu was pacific version of Atlantis. The theory of its existance was made in the late 1800's and never really caught on. Anyways, the theory goes that this Race that lived on Mu (Mulians) were extremely advanced, but their contient disappeared magically and the survivors settled in modern day Polynesia (explaining the creation of Easter Island). From this I gather that the world was somehow tuned in both race's favor where they could live in harmony with one another creating a sort of alternate reality.

I would say RahXephon more or less used Evangelion as inspiration, not a copy. The two shows are completely different, they only appear similar at first glance.

Personally, I wasnt a big fan of the RahXephon movie. Just to clear that up. The only good part was the ending.

          RE: RahXephon vs. Evangelion

Nice synopsis Jewpin. I also have read deeply into the mythology of Eva and I know a great more than what I wrote. For example, remember when everyone's souls were being concentrated in Lilith's egg? Well from a regular anime fan, they would think they are all screaming as they die. That is not the case. Since the HIP was to join everyone's souls into one, it was as if the enitre worl had one giant spiritual (or metaphysical if you want it that way) orgasm as they died. That's pretty deep when you think about it.

Also, I loved the RahXephon movie. It's nice and tidy. However I hated the part when Ayato killed the first girl he shacked up with because she turned into a Mu. I almost cried when she was sending her message thorugh the lights of the city.

Its, sooo blatantly obvious the Evangelion pwns Rahxephon. I mean just look at em, ill admit, Rahxephon has some better quality in the animation deparptment, but come on, its freakin Eva. Enough said

RahXephon is a great anime dont get me wrong... but it in no way compares to Neon Genesis Evangelion which is quite possible the greatest anime of all time. Better voice actors, (I like the art more.. but RahXephon looks nice to). Evangelion has much cooler mechs

When I saw RahXephon, after the first six or so episodes I had a feeling that it would be exactly like Eva, so I just stopped watching. So I really can't put my two cents here, but I agree that they're similar just from watching the first few episodes. Evangelion was such an intense and original series though, I don't think anything similar could be better than it.

The series being discusssed besides, this is just about every anime out there. ESPECIALLY ones with giant robots. Most Gundam series have a character, even if he's not the main character, who fits that description, for example.

That's one reason I like Trigun. Vash is one of the most unique "true hero" type characters in any form of entertainment (literature, movies, TV, and otherwise), ever created, in my humble opinion.

Couldn't Spike (Cowboy Bebop) also be one of those "true hero" types? Even though he did it for the money, he had his standards.

Spike seems like sort of an anti-hero tho- (although he can't be technically seeing he is the main character) but he is an outlaw... definately a form of hero. True yes.... pure no

The first ten episodes of RahXephon are horrible. Once you get past the first 10 episodes the series really starts to pick up.
